AN OLD MILL
Somewhere near four miles south
west of Daniolsville there is an o'A
mill. It is a two story building At
the back of the mill flows .South river
and also at the back there is what is
known as the Water House which
runs from the pond to the back of the
mill. From this stream is secured
the water power to turn the big wa
fer wheel.
Near the mill is a store, gin and a
sawmill, also operated by water pow
er. It would be very interesting for
any one to go anti see the different
kinds of machines at work, especially
Ihr miil where the floor is divided
into the different grades, ar.d the
corn ) ground into meal.
When first entering the mill one
might think thorc was very little
to do. But after watering the miller
a while we find there is very much to
be looked after. Lot us look at the
grinding of corn: first, it iu shelled
which is done by a Small machine
turned bv hand. Th-*n it is passed
an to a largo nircular atone which
rrn.'.iies the grain and then on thru
atfcer processes until meal is made.
All of these operations ti ke place
ii the first floor. Now Vi ns g
op stairs and see what is taking
place there. The work i.; not half
so interesting sw that down stairs,
in fact, there is very little going on
there. If we should go up when they
were grinding corn there would Le
nothing for us to see, but when wheat
is being ground the tiny grains or
the “xvasio wheat,” as they call it,
comes up there and falls on the floor.
There are other things such as
cl jc tricity and modern machinery
which take the place of the old pict
uresque mills. Yet modern machin
ery can hardly make thcao buildings
and surrounding!* mere beautiful
ihfui they arc.
