Eskew ; It does not non appear probable that cotton production in 19.24 will | exceed, if it equals, the world's nor i mal demand. It e? altogether unlikely that We shall have a burdensome sur plus, such as we had from 1920 to i 1922, for some years. At the same time the experience of tire last*two years of short supply i shows clearly that in the actual con- sumption of dry goods there if. a price point beyond which the consumer refuses to buy. Mills are compelled j.to curtail manufacturing at this time ! because they cannot sell their prod ; uots in the usual volume though they offer them at substantially lower prices than last year when cotton ws* cheaper than it is now. For several weeks in April and early May I cqtton watt more than t cent a, pound j higher and print cloth more than a | cent a pound lower than at the same j time Jaet year. Those facts suggest: 1. We should be’ able to sell this year’s production at favorable pric j es compared with last ytar but we | should not expect substantially high | er prices. 2. There is no profit at present | prices for cotton that yields no more per aert than last ya<. 3. The assurance of profit lies in | producing mere cotton to the acre i at the same cost of cultivation.
