RESOLUTIONS Resolutions Presented By The Com mittce of Brother Lawyers Prac ticing At The Danielsville Bar, Appointed by Judge W. L. Hodges To Be Presented At the Memorial of Brother John E Gordon, to he Held at the March Term, 1924; at the Madison Superior Court Yuur committee beg leave to submit the following: Brother John E. Gordon was born in the 6th day of November, 1854, in Franklin County where he spent his young life. Hia father was killed in the Civil War, at the Battle of Vicksburg, while defending the righto of his loved Southland. It thus devolved early in life on him to look after, provide for and support his widowed mother, two sisters, and a small brother. These duties he per formed ably and well. At the age of twenty-five he mov ed to Madison County and engaged in mercantile business 1 ; he married Miss Georgia A. Porterfield, a daugh ter of Richard Porterfield, a"proaper our farmer of Madison County, soon after his coming here. Ten children were the issue of this marriage, eight of whom survive him together with his wife, He joined the Methodist church some thirty-eight years ago. Was a good and consistent member, and for some years prior to his death, he was a Steward and Trustee of the Daniels ville Methodist Church. For some yeara he -was Treasurer of the County of Madison and he also held the office of Councilman and lat er Mayor cf Danielsville for a num ber of terms. Brother Gordon was admitted to the Bar on the 4th day of March, 1896, by Judge Samuel Lumpkin then presiding; he was ex amined by Hon. Howard then Solic itor, now leading Lawyer of Augusta, the lrte Judge David W. Meadow, under whom lie read law and others. Hu devoted his time to the practice of his profession, from that time to the day cf his death. Being connect ed with almost all of the important coses in the courts of that County. At the time of hi a death, Oitober 7th, 1923, he was tne oMest member of the Bar at Danielsville; He was within one month of seventy years of age at the time of his death. He formed a partnership with his son, It. Howard Gordon, in 1914. of which he vnis Senior member. The partnership continued until the time of his death. n He left surviving him Mrs. Geor gia A. Gordon, his wife, and eight children: Mrs. Clyde W. Stewart of Orlando, Florida; Mnf. Elbe L. Smith of Atlanta; Mrs. Bethel R. Rogers of Danielsville; Mrs. Gertie Graham of Athens; Mr. E. C. Gordon of Athens; Mr. R. H. Gordon of Danielsville; Mr. J. T. Gordon of Elberton; and Mr. 4■ E, Gondon Jr. of the United States Navy. Resolved, that in the death of Brother John E. Gordon, the Metho dist Church lost a good and consist ent member, the town of Danielsville and Madison County a prominent citizen, and one who wag always ready to extend a helping hand to i others; The Bar a prominent and loved, member; and the family a de voted, kind and indulgent husband and father. We all not only miss him now but will continue to do so as the years roll on. Resolved, further, That the Judge of the Superior Court of Madison C'ohnty be. and is requested to have these resolutions spread upon the j Minutes of the Superior Court of | said County, as a Memorial of our 'departed brother John E.
