Now she comes into a fortune of $2,000,000 —gold for land purchased by her f rand-dad, John Baird, now dead, ut 35 years ago a poor Brooklyn policeman. Old John Baird was ashamed to tell the family he had purchased the Florida land. A recent search for title revealed the fact, then the heirs were located. Below, the Baird children. * MT. Patten. Miss Jane Burroughs went up bo Saw Dust Sunday to attend the fu neral of her sister, Mrs Bettie Bar nett. We extend our sympathy to her in the loss of her sister. Mr. Ben Patten a former resident of this community but now of Itoys .ton haa the heartfelt syrnpatny 'of this entire community in Hie death of his wife, which oecuired Saturday j afternoon with appendicitis. The de ceased leaves besides her hu feand, seven children, three boys and four l girls, the youngeut being only a few : weeks old. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. G. F. Taylor and interment made m Franklin Springs Cemetery Sunday afternoon in the presence of a largo concourse oi redatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. IVJrlten Rollins at tended divme services at Macedonia Sunday last. One of the most enjoyable enter tainments of the season was the “Tacky Party” at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jnsse Patten in honor of their niece, Mis- Velna Patten Sat urday night. The •ntire evening was one of merriment as there were prizes for the boy or girl who looked the tackiest” and quite a ndraber competed, eons&quentlv it was hard far the judges to decide, However when the decision was made it was wem by Miss Pauline Irvin and Mr. Cecil Eaven. The hostess endeavored to have juust as “tacky” prizes as the com petitors were. So the explosion of laughter was great when Miee Irvin opened her box and found a jug of swbet mfWc and a “pone” of “fatty bread,” and Mr. Evans an joyed the contents of his box, as it was a boil ed pig tail. Mrs. Will Irvin and Mbs. Cartfchers assisted the hostess in serv ing continually during the evening., such “Tacky” refreshments as syr up candy, parched peanuts and gan ger snaps, which were voted to be perfectly delicious althoAigh ideally “tacky.” Master I>oilen Carithers spent the past wwek-er.d with little Randolph Lord near Meadow. He picked up the former champ, “Strangler" Lewis, and tossed him from the ring. Lewis w&s injured so seri ously he could not resume.
