This put Colbert in the bracket
with Oamesville to fight for third

in which the Colbert five out guessed
their opponents. This being th e last

COLBERT HAS SUCCESSFUL
SEASON
The basket ball season of 1924-
25 of Colbert High School has just
ended and we feel like it has been a
successful one from every standpoint
The C. H. S. boys played fifteen
(15) high school games, losing only
three (3) of them and winning
twelve (12). '
The total number of points scored
by our opponents was ISO while the
C. H. S. boys scored 283.
We are sure that the C. H. S.
boys are going forward and build a
wonderful team next season under
the leadership of their new captain,
kamie Kellar, and the alternate cap
tain, Bradford Hitchcock.
The boys seem to feel that the
hard grind and the continuing of
hard practice was all worth while.
e feel that the success of the team
*as largely due to the splendid
coaching of Coach H. P. Davis,
bis work has been very highly prais
ed by every one. He has been very
patient with these boys, working with
them from day to day in order to
iriake theirs a winning team.

It was highly enjoyed by every

THE VALUE OF HOME TRAINING
There are many things which in
fluence the lives of children, but the
two most important factors are the
home and school. Of these I think
the home is most important
The home is the best place in de
termining character and efficiency of
the men and women who make up
our social being.
It is in the home that conscience
awakens; here ideals are found; here
the inner spirit of every life is de
termined —and this is what determin
es society. Any social order will be
but temporary in existence and tem
pestous in its passing unless it grows
naturally out of the spirit and ideals
established in the homes of our peo
ple.
Home is the training school and
place of apprenticeship for larger so
cial life. By its life and organization,
its labors, sacrifices and modifying
effect in one’s personal habits and
tastes. It is really training its mem
bers for living in the world ar.d lay
ing the foundation for character.
The home is a great factor in de
termining the physical and moral
conditions of, society; v r hether we
shall have a race stunted, ill-nourish
ed and undeveloped or a race °f effi
cient men and women is determined
by the character of our homes. No
othc? agency but home reaches per
sonality so persistently!
No other agency is augmented by
so many great forces, such as memo
ry, affections, traditions and all the
emotions. It is impossible to even
conjecture bow much the dream of
home has done for men in holding
their lives true to its pole-star during
high storms and hard stress.
In some hoines there is an inferior
level of refinement and intelligence,
in others there is positive misery.
Only those who explored the hab
itation of the poor in great cities
can concieve of the misery and cru
elty, the baseness and the pain, the
tragic issues and discouraging prod
ucts of family life where the finer
nature is corrupted by external cir
cumstances.
TRUE LEADERSHIP
One of our greatest needs to-day
is true leadership. By true leader
ship we mean one who can direct
others to think clean thoughts, do
honest work and be fair in play.
The school should be a factor in
developiing leadership. Some pupils
have a tendency to be leaders while
others like to follow. If this talent
for leadership is not carefully direct
ed it may develop into the wrong
kind of leadership, and one bad pu
pil can lead a dozen others into mis
chief. So what we need to do is to
see that the leaders of our school are
&HE DANIELSVILI E • MONITOR DANIELSVILLE, GA.
j "i
those who hare the good of the
school and country at heart.
When a good leader is
he should be to rejjdgcod
literature, and take part in the lead
ing activities of the community and
school. In fact'all pupils should be
urged to take advantage of every
opportunity for leadership, because
in some instances the tact for leader
ship remains dormant until the pu
pil reaches high school, or even col
lege, and then he realizes his new
power. In such an instance one lead
er may help another by saying an en
ro’-raging word. A cheerful word
/-* - pleasant smile from a true lead- ,
’• heirs many a person along the
' of life.
If you want honest work and fair
-d?y to be a standard of your school,
the leaders must stand for honestv
and fairness in play. Without lead
ership of the right kind we can never
'tt-hn the high standards of life.
'"he home is another factor in de
'T’”'n:ne leadership. Our greatest
'ers of today are those who came
'-•cm worth while homes. If a boy
?irl is brought up at home to be
a ’eader, be will be more than likely
be leaders in his ftiture life. They
should be taught to carry on things
by themselves and not wait for some
tVne to lead and then they follow.
We should all strive to have true
leadership and let’s not always be
the followers in both the school and
community.
THE CALL TO ACTION
Now, as never, before, the world
is calling for action. Every boy
and girl should feel it their duty to
their country to be active. It is pos
sible for every boy and girl to get
an education if they have enough
grit and determination to go after
it. Don’t be a slacker! Have action
and be a booster! As Newton’s Law
states, “To Every Action there is
an equal and opposite reaction”! ac
cording to that, every effort
put forth is something gained. The
business of the world never stands
still; it either goes forward or back
ward .
What would happen if we were in
active ? Naturally everything
would be on the road to ruin. We,
the young people of today, will be
the leaders of to-morrow, and we
should always put forth our best ef
forts and see that things are moving
onward and not backward.
School-mates, respond to the call
for action and never let it be said a
bout ydu that you are failing to do
your duty. —Velma Thurmond, ’25
TODAY DECIDES OUR
TOMORROW
All of us have an opportunity to
make to-morrow bright. Lot’s of
boys and girls have a chance to go
to school and some will get to about
the seventh grade and stop because
they want to be petted by the teach
er. They think they are having the
time of their lives and they will say
to each other, “Look at that boy go
ing to school, he is just wasting his
time.
But the time has passed when a
man can make a living without an
education. Some people knock the
school because they don’t know the
value of an education. Some boy3
and girls get to go thru High School
and will not go to college because
their parents are not. able to pay
their expenses, and they wont work
their way; they are afraid they night
he laughed at, but I had rather work
for 4 years to get a college education
than to work all my life for someone
else. Without an education you will
have to work for someone else.
Mr. Davis very often tells us the
wants of tomorrow. So never put off
what you can do to-day.
I have heard numbers of people
say that they would be better off to
day if they had taken advantage of
their past opportunities.
Prepare to-day /or our to-morrow,
as today decides our to-morrow.
