ReT. Robert Knox, L.L.D., of Belfaat,
Ireland, waa the firat cpuxker. He atruck
the keynote of the meeting by an elo
quent appeal to abide in Chnat-
Bct. Xanayan Sheapidnt, a converted
Brahmin and member of the Free Church
of S olland. wa- the next apenkcr. Ho
wore hi* t urban and flowing rolie. He
gave an account of the project on hand
of founding a Christian colony in the
Bomb-.y premdeney—of an evangelical
conference held at Allahabad of minuter*
from all porta of the world, and of the
founding of a native Christian alliance
in India. Concluding, he said the time
would come when the world would be
brought to God and peace reign upon the
earth. ,
The President hero observed that if the
promise of conversion of the natives is
being realized in India, why not among
the American Indians ?
Rev. Dr. Coutin, of Geneva, delivered
an address in French oo the relations of
Christianity and modern prognoa.
Rev. Dr. Hoge, of Riehtioml. Va.
spoke briefly on Union in Christ as th<
t of a proud ref- bond of the Alliance. He said if
all the Protestants of the world united
for political power or for gaining new in
fluence by an aggregation of numbers
and wealth, tbeir lioml would be a rope
of mad. He differed with those who
sought Union by making litUo of pecu
liar doctrines, for the doctrines of the
Bible make up the summary of Christian
character.
