ATWOOD'S COTTON LETTER
Special Wire to Lyona & James.
Near York, July 21.—The two hours that
tn is market was open today developed a
kttle further weakness and closed 3 points
below last night, although Liverpool closed
a shade better. Thrre ore confirmations
today from Texts of nilna In the south
western portion on the 19th and 2Ptb.
The important question to be determined
» how far will the movement of the new
crop be afTectel by a further decline,
with any considerable receipt** In August
or the new crop, unless there are im
proved trade conditions on this side and
abroad, or adverse ?rup accounts, there
might bo a very decided, weakness In

of contracts. No encouragement

thow a disposition to drop to a lower
level on this aide, and there Is no IndU
cation that domestic nplnners nre any

Chicago, July 21.—After the opening loss
to values and a further slight receseto.i,
coming from lower cables, large receipts,
fine weather and. small export clearances
this week from both coasts, it looked
as though the downward progress yA*ter-
day *was arrested, but after a rally had
taken place on some buying against puts
and by a few shorts, there was a resump
tion of the Journey toward zero. Sep
tember wheat opened at from 54% to 54%,
sold between 64% and 64 , closing at 64V4**
%, a net loss of % from yesterday. Cash
wheat was In good demand; prices suf
fered a lose of about 1 cent per bushel.
Corn was less active but quite a« firm
as yesterday. September corn opened at
42% to 42%, sold between 42% and 42%,
closing at 42%, % higher than yesterday.
Oats sympathized with wheat and corn
all day, but at the close the strength
was apparently an Individual attribute.
The disposition after the opening was
to cut loose on Umlr allegiance to wheat
and to follow com; then, when the esti
mates for Monday were heard, the .irm-
ness wak -rtiore pronounced. September
oats closed %a% hlghsr than yesterday.
Cs.ih odta closed weak.
Provisions were again lifeless, the
steady hog market and indisposition to
trade In product reeulted In a quiet, feat
ureless market, with prices holding at
about the sarnie point all day. The close
was unchanged from yesterday for Sep
tember* pork and ribs, with lard Just a
shade higher.
