Charged With Shooting Sam Bentley,
Clapt. Nelson's Colored Reporter.
Wsycrwa. Ga.. July ».--tSpeeU1.V-
Oot L L Thomas; a prominent lawyer
of Waynesboro, was arrested last night
by Deputy John Ceeon upon a warrant
•wore out by 8am Bentley, the negro
who was tthot on ibe Brunswick and
Western railroad night before last, ebarg.
fag hint with being the party who did
ibo alio sing.
We learn that Coi. Themes denies shoot
ing Bentley, and says be will be able to
prove that he 1^ not the party.
Col. Thomas came to Waycroes with
the officer this morning and demanded a
preliminary trial. Tho wounded negro
having been sent to Albany, his counsel
Hitch & Meyers, could not go into trial,
claiming that other wltnoesra were also
absent. Col. Thomas was then put under
a Vo bond for his appearance at auch
time os he should be wanted. What
the nature of the testimony against Col.
Thosas Is the Herald Is not Informed,
but both he and hls friends say he did
not do the shooting. Col. L. A. Wilson
represent. Col. Thomas. It Is understood
today that Bentley will recover.
Sheriff hllller and hls passe returned
last night from tho pursuit ot the negro,
Tom Johnson, who murdered Conductor
Nelson. Tho dogs follower him ebout
nine miles and the trail was finally lost
In tho rlier swamp. It Is thought that
other parties aro after him today and
It seems almost Impossible that he should
nnally escape. It Is understood that a re-
ward will be offered for tho murderer by
the stato and probably by the railroad
authorities.
Johnson met a negro yesterday morning
when fleeing from the post' ond told
him that ho had killed a .conductor and
wuh trying to get away. -Ho was bare
headed and seemed in bad‘plight
