A bea*t-#hnped plat of greenest turf,
stone bordered, and a wealth Of nastur
tium blooms on it3 edges, all the varied
colors and shades of yellow, red and
gold in its blossoms, and the unvarying
tint of green In its leaves-ithis Is tho
jewel nwv sparkling before me. The
far-away blue mountains, the purple
haze, the dark background erf oak for
est and the bluest sky line—this is the
setting of the .Jewel aforesaid,
strange that I love to sit here and
dream and that I can never cease to
wonder at the matchless beauty of na

••Full many a spot
Of hidden beauty have I chanced to
espy
Among ihe mountains; never one like
this:
So lonesome and so perfectly serene,
Not melancholy—no, for it is green,
And bright and fertile, furnished In it-

With the few needful things xholt life
requires. * '
Its rugged arms how softly does it lie,
J/ow tenderly protected!”
Love at all times is Interesting; yea,
to all men and consequently to ail wo
men. But ft seems to me that love In
summer by piticld brooks, under the um
brageous shade of graceful elms and
sturdy oaks, with the fali ezt of canopies
overhead, surrounded by humming bees
and 'trailing birds and with flower be
decked meadows as the living and
breathing pictures upon which-Move’s
eyes may rest—with such surroundings
Dt seems to me that love can' but be alive
and bloom and frud/ten. Is this, think
you, the reason that men and maidens
scurry away from the brick And montar
of cities as summer approaches Mid seek
the valleys nnty mountains, ns well as
the seashore? It may be, and yot lave
has its times in winter as well as Bum

Pale face and Indian maiden had passed
from earth, their arms entwined, heart

Upon this accursed spot, therefore, no

an almost Impenetrable mass of forest.

covering its abrupt endfl and edges,
working in and out. here showing a liv
id green, there the brown luxuriance of
forceful growth, and yonder the vivid
colors of autumn ‘and autumn's sun,
clambers the love vine. Its graceful
tendrils clasp everything within reach;
now it is a lordly oak, again a sle.ider
maple, first one of ftfhe logs of the ill-

der Indian earn thait has Just started
above 'Che fertile ground at the very
threshold of poor Allen's home. But It
is undisturbed In its wild, luxuriant
beauty. No human hand ever dears it
from its subtle cllnglngs, and I would
fain believe dhat the lovely vine In its
quiet, 'tender way is but dhe fragrant
memory of those two pure eouls, the
brave pale face and the lovely Indian
maiden, whose lives wemt out on that
tempestuous night so long ago. And
may Hheir #ouls be entwined in some
favored place ns ihe love vine still en
twines the sturdy oak nnd the tender
plant. So may it not be long before the
evir-busy hard of min shall unite his
zeal and energy to transform this lonely
mountain,
"And fit the bleak and howling place
For gardens of a finer raoe."
