Although comparatively few people
know of it there are many Indications
of a gold mine within one mile of the
Bibb county court house.
The mine, or wihat has long been sup
posed -to he a mine, 1s In the Immediate
neighborhood of the point nt which the
Macon and Indian Spring railroad
crosses the Vinevtlle branch, Just be
yond Riverside cemetery.
The old residents of Macon have
known of the gold Indications alt tWs
point for many years, end It la said
that nn old gentleman named Camp
bell, whewe widow Is now living on
Third street, panned many thousands
of dollars worth of gold out of the
branoh at this point. No one has given
the place much attention since Mr.
Campbell’s death. ellthoughi occasion
ally some old resident con be seen In
specting the ground. Some years ago
Detective Charlie Wood, who was one
of ‘the few who knew that Mr. Camp
bell panned gold out of the sand In the
branch, ‘had an expert, who was at the
time a California wine drummer, but
Who toad formerly been a prospector on
•the Pacific slope, make an examina
tion of the soil. etc., at this particular
point, and In his opinion there were
strong Indications of a rich mine In the
nelighorhood, in all probability In one of
the adjucent hills at ‘the base of which
the branch runs. Mr. Wood kept h1s
actions secret for many years in tihe
hope of some day buying the land, but
has never done so, lut'd some <lme ago
told a Telegraph- reporter about it.
The 'topography of the land Is such as
would indicate gold. On either side of
the branch are high hills grown over
With trees and underbrush. The branch
washes against the sides of the hills
and t'he sand forming the branch fhlrly
sparkles with bright particles, most of
which appear to be mica.
Whether there is gold fa the hills at
this point or not, many of the old resi
dents will never be convinced thait
■ahers Is not until a thorough test Is
made, and there ace several who abso
lutely know of their own knowledge
that Mr. Campbell made many thou
sands of dollars by panning gold out
of the sand In the branch (n bis life
time, and if there was gold there then
why not now?
Mr. D. WacWtel left yesterday for the
Eastern markets, where he will pur
chase his stock of fail and winter
clothing and novelties.
OH. WDAf A COUGH.
Will you heed'the warning? Tha
signal, perhaps, of the sure approach
of that more terrible disease, consump.
tton. Ask yourself if you can afford
for the sake of saving 60 cents run the
risk and do 'nothing for It. Wo know
from experlnece that Shiloh’s Cure will
euro your cough. It -never falls. This
explains why more than a million bot
tles wero sold tho past year. It re
lieves croup and whooping cough at
once. Mothers, do not be without It.
For lame back, aide or cheat, use Shi
loh’s Porous Plasters. Sold by Good-
wyn & Small Drug Company, corner
Cherry street and Cotton avenue.
