AN INTERESTING HISTORY.
So far as Mr. Horn's railroad career
Is osuagrned there la .-tn interesting his
tory connected with his l.ft. Troi»ab/y
no man, to have attained tbe high po-
Iiltion he now occupies it, Hit- railroad
world, atnrtud lower down the prov
erbial ladder of fame cuuu lie.
As a small boy, not more Umu h or
IU yearn old. be first conceived within
b.s youthful bosom that spirit of tndh-
iKtmi-atoo and iodoniinUrio push ibat
lias been the backbauo of his success In
life. One day while attending to ills
duties in school at bis home in Michi
gan, he and the teacher, a large and
powerful man, had some misunder
standing aibout young Horn's conduct.
The teacher tried to flog him anil be
rcAootcd tho attack with great spirit,
it is needless to say that the teacher
came out first bent, lint tins did not
have the effect of conquering Uie boy.
Highly enraged and swearing revenge
on bis preceptor, the boy took bis lint
and books nnd left the schoolroom.
Outside he lay In walling for the ene
my with a large brick. Bo when the
teacher, all smiling and forgetful of the
little episode of a few minutes before,
stepped cut upofl the ground little Tom
suited Ills threat to action and pulled
uwny at the teacher with all bis might,
landing the brick safely on Ills head and
easily knocking him out.
Fearful that thu results might be over
so bad, and not willing to face bia
homo people, tho boy set off to tbe rail
road station and when he got there tgut
made up his mind to strike out in the
world for liimsulf. lie, boarded the first
railroad train that came along, and u
few days’ plundering around amongst
all lr>mls and uoad.tion# of mankind,
found himself In Cblcago.
He applied for nnd was given a place
hh l«'ll boy nt one of the leading hotels
of tho big Western city. Ho remained
there for some timu until something
displeased 1km nnd Uieu started back
home, doing the youthful "hotio" act
in a highly successful manner.
Once more at home, he .vas glad
enough to bike tho raspings of a dis
pleased father and went to work
around Iho railroad In Ills native town.
From -linikcinuu bo Anally became con
ductor, and tiien in ono capacity or an
other gradually rose into prominence
when quite n young man.
