SENATOR GORDON WILL SPEAK
lie Offer, Ills Services 1o the Stale Can

IVork—t.t,t of the Speehers,
Atkm'ta, Sept. 26.—(Special.)—A Pop*
ul(3t trick that Is os yet something of
a puzzle 'to 'the Democtutlo mau'agers
came to light today through Col. Al
lan Candler, secretary of state. Three
weeks ago Ool. Candler sent out the
blanks tor tlhe election Uo the ordinaries
of she counties. a3 tho lair}- requires.
The packages Of blanks mere received
duly and ackowledged and the mtufter
was dismissed from the mind of the
secretary of State.
Yesterday oifternoon, however, he was
handed a package by the postman, who
said postage tsliaimps hold been neg
lected. COl. OinUler opened the package
and found -that it oon'lalnod a full set
of election blanks Bimilar to those ho
had senll out. Tho package hud not
come from hie ofilce, however, dnd
wat addressed to ai oitlzeu Instead of
an ordinary.
This looks suspicious. The Populists
are evidently -prepjieng a scheme of
some sort in connection with 'the dupli
cate blanks. Tho timely discovery by
Secretary Candler has, however, 1 put
the Democratic (man-agora on' novice
and .the modus operandl of the Fopultot
faikirs will be Closely wuitohed on tho
•dtiiy of the election.
It la thought -that the intension was
‘to substitute bogus returns for tho
regular returns.
Senator Gordon reached the city this
mprnlng. He was one of the visitors at
Democratic headquarters, where he
•wen* 'to discuss the situation and ten
