THE GOVERNOR’S
LAST PARDON
Alice While, a Young Girl Sentence to
Five Years in the Peni
tentiary,
HAS BEEN RESTORED TO LIBERTY
Hsr Crime Was That of Kidnapping n
Girl nnd Sanding Hsr to n Homo
of Shnme In SAvonnoh.
Atlanta, Oet. 12.—(Special.)—Alice
White, the Savannah girl, who, as a
convict, has had a very sensational
record, has been pardoned by Governor
Northern The girl, who Is yot (n her
teens, was convicted of kidnapping
nnd was sent 'to the camp at Heard-
mont, Elbert county, to serve a term
of five years. She has served about
half that time, and the presumption
that ehe has already been sufllclently
punished, together with the recom
mendation of Judge Falilgant, Solicitor
General Frazer and the Jury which
convicted her, lnduoed the governor to
restore her liberty as one of the last
acts of hts administration.
About a year ago Alice White es-
caipcd from the penitentiary. At that
time She enjoyed the distinction of be
ing the only white woman IB the Geor
gia penitentiary. Her escape was sur
rounded by circumstances that caused
suspicion to be cast upon the officials,
nnd her recapture was also attended
with unusual features. To get at the
bottom of the case. Governor Nor then
had a. special Investigation made. The
report of this Investigation exonerated
the official..
The girl created another sensation in
the camp by claiming that she 'was
whipped brutally by the overseer. HeT
mother came to Atlanta, and begged
Governor 'Northen to pardon, that she
luad determined to reform, but Ifie
governor was Immovable.
Alice White’s crime was 4n sending n
young girl to a home kept by a wo
man of notorious character, where she
was detained. Her defense was that
the girl went voluntarily, knowing tho
character of the place, but the evidence
was ithuit Alice pretended to be send
ing the girl to a dressmaker's.
Governor 'today passed upon several
other applications for clemency. He
has only a half dtozen more to dispose
of 'before his administration closes. He
■with leave a perfectly clear Held for his
successor.

markable record on pardons. When ho

300 and 400 applications on file—'the
accumulation of years. In tho four
years of his Incumbency he has dis
posal of all 'these as well as the hew
