the Offer Made by the
Opposition.
WILL K0T DESERT TDE TICKET
Feel Bound to Support .the Nora liter a

the Fight Will Be Contin
ued Till Elvctlon.
The meeting last night of the Good
Government Club was largely attended.
It was known pretty generally what
would be the nattire of the business
coming before th s meeting, and It wes
business of sufficient interest and im
portance to call forth the crowd who
settled in tlio'.r seats nud stood around
in parts of the ball where seats were
not obtainable,
Pres'doato Willingham called tha
meeting to order and made a statement
to the effect that.be had been handed
a communication, nn which be had no
authority to act and whioU he had re
ferral to the executive committee of
the Good Government Club. Ho fur
ther stated Hint the executive commit
tee had fully considered this communi
cation and colluded by submitting
the report of the committee, together
■with the communication, to the club.
The following is the communication to
which Mr. Willingham had reference:
Macon, Ga„ Nov. SO, 1SD4.—It is un
derstood and agreed between the cha r-
men of the two clubs, to be ratified by
8 o'clock tomorrow night, that the nine
men named shall select the ticket.
That the iplatfo.-m shall include a
provision that the aldermen shall mnko
no changes In the laws, hut that they
shall remain as at present, to ho rigidly
enforced. That me “Good Government
Club” shall withdraw formally their
ticket and the ticket elected shall ho
known as a compromise ticket, to run
upon a new platform selected by this
committee, composed of the two chair
men and Mr. T. D. Tinsiey. ’
Tbo following gentlemen have been
ratified and accepted by this club: It.
E. Park, It. H. Plant, S. B. Price, Dr.
J. S. Baxter, W. H. ltos3, J. F. Han
son, W It. Cox, T. J. Carling and T. D.
Tinsley. '•
John M. ITorton, Secretary.
Tbo following is the conclusion ar
rived at by .the exceutiva committee:
REPORT OP EXECUTIVE COM
MITTEE.
First, that Hie committee had no
author ty from the club to take any
definite or b'ndlng action In relation
thereto, but that its duty was to sub
mit the same to you for your consid
eration and aotlon, with such recom
mendations as we might see proper to
suggest.
Second, we are of the opinion that
unless some very Strong reason foe suen
action should he first shown we would
be merely stultifying ourselves to with
draw the t'ekot we have unanimously
uom'natcd and abandon a platform wo
have unauimonsly adopted.
We submit tliat no such reason has
been shown or or suggested In the
proposition submitted. Our platforgi
Is one that every good citizen must In
dorse. Our ticket may not give uni
versal *U'..sfactlo,n and it is not possi
ble to nominate one that wllli 'To ac
cede to such a proposition, we must not
only repudiate our own action; but wo
must repudiate tne gentlemen we hiro
nominated, when ne'<her one of them
war an aspirant and waen each ono of
them aiwept»d -.he uoiu-nation up' i. our
excitation. To pursue such a course
aa th's la forbidden b7 cur srif-respcct
and by our loyalty n ou- ticket.
Before we nominated our ticket w«
published our platform or.a Invited cud
even urged all the citizens of Macon
la syu.ptthy with the movement with-
/>ut regard to race or ctiss to Jcfn our
nicy to participate In our uwninatlons,
and for Ultra (O lema.n away until we
rave acted as best we coula t-ud then
ask its to undo all we have -done is
asking too mut-n, however honest and
patriotic may be their motives and
purposes.
It they want good government and
straightforward, honorable men, we
have In the utmost good faith offered
•them both. If they want peace, why
not acquiesce? We have a ticket al
ready ip the fleffi, and they have none.
We have acted from no spirit of
animosity toward these geucleman or
toward any other of Our Ietlow citi
zens. We have no designs on their
(rights. Interests, properties or busi
nesses. Wo propose no changes of Urn
law, blit only to enforce the laws. Our
platform plainly declares our purposes,
and we have no designs not thus de
clared. That this Is a movement for
prohibition, either directly or Indirect
ly. we emphatically deny.
Wo want peace now, and peace
hereafter—,that peace which will fol
low good will and good feeling among
our people, and which only cun be
secured and maintained by a faithful
and impartial enforcement of the law.
Wc have no assurance whatever
that a platform declared and a ticket
nominated in the manner proposed
would give any more or as much satis
faction as the one we have nominated.
Our ticket was presented by a com
mittee of 'thirty, and nominated by the
entire club, which now consists of near
ly 700 representative citizens. If our
friends cannot acquiesce to such n
nomination when they had full oppor
tunity to participate In It, can tt bo
expected that all of our people wilt
acquiesce to, or submit In advance to
a nomination and a platform to be
made by a committee of nine, when
they do not know the views or Inten
tions of all of the members of the
committee, and when they are not to
have the right to reject or ratify sucji
ticket or platform.
Wo do not think so, and so far ns
we arc concerned we do not pretend
to have the power or authority to bind
the people of Macon to any such man
ner or to any such extent. .We have
only assumed in the manner described
to nominate a ticket, and wo call upon
those in sympathy with us to help us
, and that Is atl. We think
18 a ticket on a good plnt-

SEVERAL SPEECHES.
Scverd speeche» were made to the re
ports and resolutions by prominent
member*, which provoked graft oothu-
elasm. The clnb was a unit In In en
doneemeot of the position taken by the
executive committee, cxeeecxt on some
intebr points which were argued from
ail suiutpuinta. In ccber words, the
Good Government Club, while differing
to come particulars on trie manrwr to
which the proposition of trie opposition
should he declined, were unanimously
in lever of daclkdnt it- The proposi
tion to submit the matter to the excel-
leaf gentlemen whose names appear on
the communication placed the Gehd
Government Club in a roroewriid <Mi-
cauj tk«fl-h»n. Every msrtxv recognized
the ir.tcftigonce. ability and honesty of
the gentlemen who tt eras proposed
should make the compromise ticket,
carl it was untvfwatly agreed that any
ticket which the nine gentlemen named
should select would be worthy of the
coulldvnce, respect And ouffrugco of ev
ery lover, of good government In Macon.
But having Invited the six excellent
gentlemen whose names appear on itric
Good Government Club’s ticket to make
die raoe, and they hmvtrag accepted. to
mlast Inataraces, at a peracnail aacriflee,
the club felt 'themselves bound by aai
the cftil3Bltlons which are hc6d sacred
by gen)*.lomen of honor to support them
against any ticket, no matter by whom
nominal ltd. They felt that It would have
been downright dterionedty to have 'al
lowed (these genttamen'B names «o be
taken off tlhe 'ticket, arid that any ac
tion looktrv? (to uti'it end would not only
be a ctomptiomlse of a ticket, but would
convpromlao theen as a club, ts citizens
apd as men.
It was suggested In several of trie
speeches 'made that If there existed *>b-
Jection to any part of Oho tteket/or to
any pant of the platform, the objection
Should to all Ihonesty have been stated
candidly and specifically, and that tbe
grounds on which these objections are
based Should also have been stated.
I For these reasons, voiced also by those
who spoke 'to the report under consid
eration. trie action of the executive
I committee was Indorsed and t'helr re
port adopted. . . .
A committee of three wus appointed
to call upon (the gentle men whose
names were suggested by the opposi
tion arid explain to them the attitude of
the Good Government Club and Its con
fidence to their wimingness and desire
to act only for trie best Interests of
Macon arid all classes of people inhnb-
Iting it.
President iWilllngham stated Cor the
information of trie dub that he toad to
an unofficial capacity named several of
these gentlemen to a member of trie
opposition movement, without bang
thoroughly advilsed as to What they
were expected to do, arid that he had
named them because he hnd entire
confidence In their integrity, intelligence
and honesty of purpose to any matter
they might undertake for tbe city.
It was resolved to have several meet-
togs to different parts of the city, at
which the sympathizers with obis move
ment could rally to the cause of good
government.
NO OPPOSITION MEETING.
The opposition club did not hold n
meeting at Ayres’ hall, as waa expect
ed, but, on the contrary, a committee
consisting of aboutt twenty-five mem
bers of the club waited until 10 o'clock
at the Floyd Rifles' Armory to hear
from trie Good Government Club.
Through a misunderstanding the com
mittee appointed by titoe Good Govern
ment Club to notify the opposition club
of the action of the Good Government
Club went to Ayres' hall for the pur
pose of notifying the opposition club,
but found no ono there, consequently
•the opposition club has had no official
notification of the rejection of • the
compromise p(position by the Good
Government Club.
Tho executive committee of trie oppo
sition club. It ts understood, held n
meeting Friday aOtennoon and adopted
trie action of some of the friends of
both clubs to compromise, and tho ac
tion of it!«e committee met tho approval
of he members.
Tho opposition club’s meeting tomor
row nfght will settle upon a tltket, and
then one bf the hottest political cam
paigns Macon has ever seen will begin.
