ether, or bofit, whs wilt use their in
fers so confident ns to remain Idle from
be ctoser-that neither wilt have a
walk-over, and the s de that does not
(poll Its full strength on election day
will get left The Good Government
men claim that the club has a member
ship of nearly 700, which, with 200
more who are not members but are in
sympathy wltrr them, will give tnom
000, and 100 of the 4SS negro votes
cast will give them 1,000 votes, or con
siderably over half of the 1,803 votes
registered. On the other hand, the op
position peopla deny tUat the Good
Government Club has 700 members and
say that even giving them all they
claim that when the time comes to vote
it will be found that fully 100 of the
700 claimed have not registered and
that 200 votes from sympathisers not
members of the club is overshooting the
mark by something over 100, anti the
100 negroes out of the 488 will dwin
dle to less than fifty on election day.
Of course all of th's Is mere talk, aud
those who talk it are Just simply whis
tling to keep up their courage. Noth
ing but the election can determine tho
result, and the side that w.as has got
to put In some hard work.
There Is no question but unat the res
olutions adopted at Saturday night's
meeting of the Good Government Club
and published In yesterday's Telegraph
made friends out of some who have
heretofore been opposed to the Good
Government Club, as they more clearly
defined their position and gave the peo
ple a clearer understanding of the ob
jects and purposes of the ,club than
they had ever {tad before. Some, of
course, were disappointed at the rejec
tion of the proposed compromise, but
the great majority took the ground that
no matter how much tho club night
deft re to compromise In order to avoid
strife. It oonld not afford to ask tho
gentlemen whom they had put on their
•ticket to withdraw from the race.
Th’s, if Is generally conceded, would
bo a great injustice to the candidates
who-bonsented ‘to run only at the ur
gent request of the club.
The latest candidate talked of on the
opposition ticket from the First ward
is 'Mr. Charles J. Unban and Mr. Frank
51. Jenkins is spoken of from the Sixth
ward to oppose Mr. Petty. It is also
thought that if Mr. Frank McOehee
can ho Induced to become a candidate
he will be pitted against Mr Hourly
In the Fourth ward. It will he tomor
row mornfng, however, hetor.t tho
ticket can be given In full, and when
ft 1s there may !>o some big surprises.
