Soma Substitutes for the Christmas Fir
Are Here Suggested.
The Christmas tree Is to be supplanted
this year. The mothers of tho land and
the aunts and the grown up. sisters have
said: "Go to, now; -we will devise some
thing new. For, lo! those many years
have our rooms boon littered with ever
green spikes; these many winters past
have our arms ached from tying Impos
sible cherubs at Impossible heights; these
many Christmases has the fire depart
ment dreaded the union of lighted candles
and dry br.un lu s. Wo will have? some
thing now.*
Two things are certain about tho nov
elty, whatever form it may take. It will
not seem so appropriate as the green tree
with Its many legends, and It will not
delight the children so much as tho gaily-
hung boughs. But It will be novel, and
(hat 1h what the mothers and aunts and
grown-up sisters want.
One rather attractive plan Is to fit up
a corner of the room as a miniature snow
field. A sheet is the best material to
stretch down, and It should have tacked
over it bits of raw cotton, with here and*
there a piece of tinsel to give the effect
of glittering snow. On this should be
placed a big sleigh. Big sleighs are not
found in abundance la every household,
of course, but tho households which have
he was more of a hero than ever. But
his money was almost gone, and he had
aa extravagant girl on his hands, the
former mistress of the Mexican whom he
had killed. Added to this, he went into
politics, and tried to be elected' sheriff.
His record as a "killer" was not in his
favor, and he was defeated by the bet
ter class of people.
About this time his wife, Mollle, fol
lowed him to a questionable house in
company with a man, it friend of Bill’s.
They came- upon the “killer" unexpect
edly In the hall, and Bill, mistaking the
reason for his wife’s presence 1n the
house, shot the man with her. * He waa
arrested and thrown Into Jail. By this
time many, people who werp afraid of
him conspired to see that he got Justice
and was hanged. Political enemies want
ed to see him removed, and the decent
people thought that an example should
be made of him oa a representative "kil
ler,"
His wife, Mollle, was almost the only
friend he had left. With all the money
at her disposal she managed to arrange
matters so that Bill escaped before the
time set for his trial. All he had left
waa his six-shooter, his reputation as a
"killer" and a horse which he stole from
tho sheriff. Evory one’s hand was now
against him, and he rode south Into the
wild country around the Wiclhta moun
tains, and then ho Joined the Rogers
gang.
had now gone’ through all tho
stages from a "tenderfoot boomer’’ to a
'game man," and thence to a recognized
tiller," and now he had landed Into the
'desperado" ranks. He held up stages
and robbed express cars. He got fill the
notoriety his nature craved. Still his Illi
nois wife clung to him and a year ago
she oven visited him at his retreat In
the Hills. But the officers followed her
no sleighs will have to depend upon the and became so hot on her-husband s trail
old-fashioned Christmas tree. The child
ren’s gifts should be packed in the sleigh
and some one should be prepared to act
as Santa Claus on Christmas morning and
distribute the load of presents. The
shafts should be wound with ground pine
and bells should be attached, so that the
traditional Santa Claus Jlnglo will be
heard.
An enormous hollow log—the yule log
In appearance If not in reality—may bo
another receptacle for gifts. A papier-
mache log with adjustable top In most
convenient for this purpose. When the
top has been lifted and the presents have
been distributed, the .make-believe log
may J>e Burned In regulation style.
A row of little wooden shoes, set in
good, old-fashioned German style, about
the fire Is an excellent substitute for tho
customary row of stockings dangling
above it. It Is a pretty Ohristmas-llke
idea to have the various presents arranged
In a snowdrift pile. All the gifts are ar
ranger! in white boxes, which have imita
tion snow In the form of spangled raw
cotton tacked ( over their lids and sides.
Bits of holly are stuck in, and tho whole
lpt Is piled loosely In ono corner. The
amount of fun which the little people
extract from the appearanco of tho pile
and from the search for their own par
ticular boxes more than pays for the dif
ficulty of arranging the snowdrift
that she had to leave. A few weeks ago
an Indian scout caught Snow napping and
shot him full of holes. Mollle learned of
his fate and committed suicide; her hero,
the ’ game" man, the "killer," and lastly
the "desperado," was dead.—New York
