FOUR FAVORITES WON.
Last Friday evening South Macon
Lodge Good Templars, In place of hold
ing -the regular weekly meeting of the
lodge, had many of their friends and
advocates of temperance with them in
a public nseemblj* at the rooms of the
lodge at .Ellis Hall, South^Mooon.
The members and gusets were wel
comed at the opening hour by a few re- #
marks from the worthy chief templar,
Mr. John W. Ellis, wha-introduetd Mr.
W. W. Davis,- who soon had his au
dience deeply Interested, In his advo
cacy of temperance, and deep,, earnest
deprecation of the whisky traffic.'For
a lhalf hour 0* eo Mr. Davis captivated
his hearers with his masterful! hand
ling of his subject, In words of appeal
to choose tho right side In the matter,
as no other would answer, and he
spoke as one experienced In many dif
ferent spheres of life in the last twen
ty years, and amidst many varieties
and nationalities of peoples.
aV the close of hl9 talk he was indi
vidually thanked by many of the mem-
btrs for his remarks of encouragement
and commendation of the order.
At the close of the meeting all were
Invited to the supper rooms, where a
repast of oysters and fruits • greeted
their eyes, to which full justice was
done. The table committee was com
posed of Mrs. S. E. Rozar, Mrs. Alice
Alexander Mte® Kate Hooker and Mrs.
Mattie Wyche, who spared no pains
during the evening to provide for their
friends and cnako them feel perfectly
ftt home. They wer aided by Messrs.
J. It. L. Rozar* A. J. Dewberry, B.
Rarnage and R. Wilder.
The Intermission was devoted to a
social''reunion between members and
friends, and in advocacy of thq prin
ciples of tlie order, and much no doubt
was done that was beneficial to its
principles. •
South Macon Lodge 152 was organ
ized March -5, 1804, and now has forty
members. They hold weekly meetings
each Friday evening.
The sad tidings of the sudden death
of Hon. Whiter T. McArthur ol Lum
ber City, Dodge county, wore received
by Mr. J. T. Ryder of South'MacCD, Ills
brother-ln-*aw, Sunday afternoon.
Mr. ^McArthur has many times rep
resented his native county, Dodge, in
the legislature, and had on Saturday
tast-been .appointed by Governor Atkin-
fcon a delegate to the cotton convention,
soon to be held at Jackson, Mississippi.
Mr. Ryder and relatives went to Lum>
ber city on Sunday night to the fu
neral.
The child of Mr. Honry Parker, a
former resident of South Macon, died at
his home in East* Macon Saturday. Tho
Interment took place in Jones Chapel cem
etery yesterday afternoon.
Top Gallant Surprised the Wise Men
at the Track.
New Orleans, La., Dec. 17.—The at
tendance a' this, tlie eighth day of the
Crescentt, City Jockey Club's meeting
was decidedly the largest Of any purse
day since the opening of the meeting.
Tho weather was lovely, and had a
tendency to help the brisk betting that
marked each of tlie five race* oafdod.
The surprise of tlie day was the vic
tory of Tommy Griffin’s brown gelding,
Top Gallant, over J. Hyman's bay geld
ing Nero, who wvia played at 1 to 2 as
though It was all over excepting the
“taking oof the bag." It was Penn’s mis
erable riding that boat Nero, who, had
ho 4)cen ridden as a thoroughbred in
stead of like tb lio/bby horse, should have
won easily. Top Gaflant was entered
to be sold for $100. and in tlie future he
will 1 sport tlie colors of the Flelsch-
inana, they having through their train
er. Lew Elmore, run his price up to
$300. Thus It win be seen that the
Fl^aehntana are playing even with
Griffin for having run Clementine's
price, tv ho won the Traction handicap
Saturday, up on them.
With the exception of Metropole, oil
of the four favorites won handily, he
having been run Ito a nose by Frank
Gayle.
IN THE PAVILION.
Weather dear and track good at New
Orleans yesterday. The track record
was lowered'by Metropole In Ithe fourth
race, and the time mado in all the
races was exceptionally good. There
was a crowd of specula tons in tho Pa
vilion, and am unusual number of good
things wont through for the talent.
Even the long.shot, Top Gallant, was
liberally played and his backers re
ceived handsome returns. And that’8
what makes the Bport so popular. See?
New Orleans is all right. So> iay, uil
lovers of the game.
Tho good people living on Second street
boyond tho reservoir respectfully call the
attention of tho road commissioners • io
the. condition of the sewer running from
tho reservoir to Wood street. During the
recent heavy rains It was demonstrated
very plainly that It was too shallow and
narrow to convey the flood of water that
flowed down the hill. All tho lots #n tho
right side Of the street from Pebble
street further down ’ were flooded and
dam'agcd. The owners hope that tho com
missioners will speedily remedy this state
of affairs. / „
