THE GEORGIA PEACH
GROWERS IN SESSION
Judge P. R. Taliaferro, judge of tfe
city .court of Sandersyllle, Is In attend,
ance on the Sunday schopl conference now
being held in the city.
Judge Taliaferro 'Is a candidate for tha
office he now bolds, which Is filled by ap.
pointment of tho governor. Ho Is being
opposed by Solicitor IS. T. Hyman of
the same court. The appointment will be
made by Governor Terrell at the Juno
session.
Both of these gentlemen have not let
any grass grow under their feet and have
been slow In letting Governor Terrell
know their desires In the matter. They
have been actively at work sometime get
ting Indorsements from their friends.
The spirited contest between the Judge
and the solicitor ot the city court of 8an-
dersvlllo recalls the light in the legisla
ture of 1900 and 1901 over tho bill by
Representative, now Congressman Hard
wick. to establish the court, was up for
passage..
There was a clause in the bill requiring
tho Judge to have practiced law for tw,>
years immediately preceding hls appoint
ment. That would have disqualified Judge
Taliaferro.* who although judge of the
county court when it was abolished by a
decision of tl»c supreme* court, had, nev
ertheless. retlr< d from the active practice
of law for many years before that.
* The bill passed the house, but was held
up In the senate on one of those bitter
local fights for which tho Georgia legl?-
, lature of recent years has become noted,
the most pronounced pf which were tho
j bitter local dispensary fights of the last
session.
Solicitor Hyman also had opposition, but
matter* were so adjusted that opposi
tion to each frittered away, the bill so
amended ns to remove the judge's dis
qualification, was passed by the senate,
and Judge Taliaferro and Solicitor Hyman
were re-appolntcd by Governor Candler to
their loTtner positions.
Now the factional fight for tho place
Is renewed again by both the present
judee and solicitor of tfyat court opposing
each oth*r.
IMS a rare thing In Georgia politics for
such a thing to happen—a solicitor to op
pose hls Judge. In the superior cours
thfse officials go hnnd In hand, the ao-
lleltor usually boosting tho Judge for a
higher place, and then stepping Into the
Judge's shoes.
Both Judge Taliaferro and Capt. Hyman
are well known here and have many
