NEW YORK. Dec. 10.—The cotton mar
ket opened weak at a decline of Salt
points which was better than due on a
very weak set of cables, owing. It seemed.
lower, but closed 9 points lower with
private cables reporting bearish senti
ments and claiming' Increased Southern
offerings. Notwithstanding this showing
and the rather bearish Interpretation of
the visible supply statement, the market
during the early trading ruled# Irregular,
but held well up to the Initial figures with
shorts the best buyers, while those who
had bought for the long account on thf
advance of yesterday seemed to be II

the determination of the South to hold

Macon Brokerage Co.'a Cotton Letter.
NEW YORK. Dee. 10.—The cottpn fu
ture market today started rnther weak,
hut naturally In consequence of Moderate
selling based on the unfavorable ndvlces
from the English market. The latter
was weak and the private advices from
the other side served to Influence some
selllpr for the account of professionals
who hoped to cover at lower prices be
fore the close of the day. The conditions
generally were not materially changed.
There was a fair movement of cotton and
the Indications pointed to rather free
marketing of the stanle. Interruption to
picking on account of rains was reported
and the reports from New Orleans con
tinued to tell of an effort on the part
of the Southern farmers to hold back cot
ton. The opinion prevailed generally that
the market will continue a good acnlplng
affair, inasmuch as tho plane of prices
Is such as to allow of In and out Trading
by floor interests. Wall street bought a
little cotton todny and the Southern
houses had mixed orders.

heavy, with no prospects of any demand
to relieve It, and with any advances ap
pearing. we would favor sales.
Corn—December dosed strong, al
though the rn*h demand wns not so great,
while there was good buying of May on
the dips, with sentiment rath-r bullish.
Oats—Nearly all the stock In store here
has been delivered out, and It resulted in
a great deal of changing Into May. Sen
timent Is Inclined to be bearish on thin
cereal.
Provision*—Hogs wer* *n smaller supply
and higher with the Cttdahvs buying In
rlhs early, although the trade was light,
while packers sold on the expectation of
large hog renelptx. that brought about a
little commission house liquidation. We
think the market should he ctosely
watched, and In the event of sharp breaks
we would favor purchases.

rather mixed, but on the dips there was
fair buying. The foroigo edvlces were
without especially fresh feature, and tho
cash markets here were steady with tho
export business light. Country offerings
wera fair. The Indications pointed to a
rather professional market In the near
future, pending mrtre definite Information
with regard to tb» position of some of
the big market Interests.
Corn was rather nervous. Borne of the
