CHAMBERLAIN’S CLAMOR.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 15.—The sen
ate committee on tcrrltorle* by a vote
of 6 to 4 today authorized a favorable
report on the statehood bill provid’ng
for the admission Into the union of
Oklahoma and IndiAn Territory to be
come the. stnte of Oklahoma, and of
Arizona and New Maglco, to become
the stale of Arizona. Thu bill is t'
one originating In the house In the
second ciesslon of tho 68th congress,
but ha* been amended mortally by
tho senate committee. The closeness
of the vote practically makes it cer
tain that thero will be a minority re
port. The opponent* of the bill will
contest Its pussage on the floor of tho
senate.
Thoso who voted today for the bill
were Senators Beveridge, Dillingham.
Nelson, Dick. Burnham And KeAn, all
of whom uro Republicans. Senator
Bard, Republican, voted against the
bill, together with Senators Bate and
Newland*. Democrats. The fourth
vote against the bill was that of Sen
ator Tatterson, who was absent, but
recorded a* voting. Senator Clarke
of Arkansas was absent also.
The most Important changes made
In the houso bill are the Insertion of a
clause prohltlng traffic In liquor for a
period of ten years In that part of the
proposed state of Oklahoma now
known ns Indian Territory and the
elimination from the house bill of
provisions with reference to suffrage
except the following.
"That said state shall nevo enact
any law restricting or abridging (he
right of suffrage on account of race,
color, or previous condition of servi
tude.” Ah passed hy the house the
bill specifically permitted the proposed
states. If they so desired, to abridge
suffrage on account of sex. The pro
vision as to Hex caused so many pro
tests from women suffragists that the
commute* struck out the provision on
this subject.

NEW YORK. Dec. 15.—Governor
Odell and many of hi* lieutenant# held
a long conference today at the Repub

and other matters of importance to the
Republican organization. At the con
ference both Senator Depew and for
mer Governor Black, the two- candi
dates for the ^c-natorrbip. were repre

The Herald will say tomorrow:
"Twenty-six leaders were In the con
ference, which was held in a parlor of
the Republican Club. They were asked
by the governor to say whether they
desired the re-election of Senator De
pew or the election of Mr. Black. Sev
enteen of them decided for Black,
nevent for Depew and two of them.
Governor Odell and Speaker Nixon,
indicated no preference. ,
"At the close of the discussion Gov
ernor Odell said the sentiment as rep
resented by the lead rs seemed to be
overwhelmingly for Mr, Black; that
he had nothing to influence and never
requested any legislator to desert Sen
ator Depew. He said if there should
be a contest In the caucus Senator De-
pew would be able to count fewer than
forty votes of tho 140 Republican leg
islators.
This assertion attracted much at
tention. It will require 101 votes to
elect a senator.”

National Prohibition Executive Com

CHICAGO, Dec. 15—After an all
day session of the prohibition national
executive committee, where heated
debate varied from personal invective
and vllllflcatlon of motives to a de

al Chairman Oliver W. Stewart of
Chicago, was at midnight deemed a
necessary sacrifice to party harmony
and his resignation was practically
demanded by a vote of 24 to 20 of the
mombers of the national committee.
At a special meeting of the prohibi

Chairman Oliver W. Stewart faced hla
accusers and replied to their charges
made during the last presidential
campaign. Ho denied every charge
against him and In return bitterly at
tacked John O. Wooley, who led the
fight on Stewart. Stewart said tho
decrease' In the prohibition voto was
due to the attacks of a prominent
prohibition paper and certain individ

campaign. He accused Woolley and
his associates of causing all the trou

"When the matter of nominating
Gen. Miles on the prohihlton ticket

over and agreed that he would be a
good candidate If he would subscribe
to tho principles of our party. 1 com
