If you should ask of any fair-minded

NIGHT SCHOOL
LIST m OPEN
So Far There Are But Few Applicants
But These Are the Okies the
School ie Intended For.
Applicants for tho night achctol
sought to be established by the board
of education are a* yet not very nu
merous.
But of the fhvr who have made ap
plication to Superintendent Chapman,
the list shows exactly the class of
young people thp night school Is In
tended for. All. of. the young people
are at work; all have previously at
tended school, and all want the bene
fit of more schooling.
Advertisements are running for ^gll
those who wlgh to attend the school
to make this application, os upon the
number thus registered depends the
question whether the school will be
established or not. It la to aettlo this
question which cornea up every now
and then that the board gives the op
portunity to all young people between
the ages of 12 and 18 years of age.
A citizen who has been observing
things, said yesterday: 'Tf All boya
were alike In mental capacity, nature
and disposition, as well as advantages,
there would be need for all the
studies In the public schools of today.
Rut all boya are not alike in any of
these things, and the result from hav
ing certain Axed atudle* tn a high
school l* that there are many of them
who never Anlsh the term. There are
hundreds of boys In Macon, and It Is
the same everywhere, whose parents
want them to hava an education, and
who Are willing to skimp and make
sacrifice* to this end. These parents
may be unable to send their boys to
higher schools, and their wish then is
that they at leant go through tho high
school, believing that for the ordinary
walks or life this education, with that
which rubbing up Against the world
will give. Is sufficient. Now some boys
fitted In some way for tho
higher studies. By higher studies I
mean thos* that are looked upon aa
extra. These boys begin to lag behind
their classes. Every lesson proves
harder and harder. Rome of them hid
rather take a whipping than get a les-
Igebra, some In Latin, and
some In other studies. Their minds
don't run In those lines. Theft come*
the truant busfnesa and Anally the
dropping out of school altogether.
After a while, when they get down to
real life and Its work, they feel the
need of the education they threw away.
Rome of these will hall with delight the
establishment of a night school. But
should th* night school force the old
nnd hated studies upon them again,
then the night school la a failure, *o
far a* they are concerned. According
to my Idea, though T may be all wreng
and too old fogy, the studies of a
night school should be the three R's.
allowing tho student the choice of
such others aa may be taught."
The board of education will be glad
to hava a full night school because It
can maintain one that la full at well
aa one with only a few pupils. In
fact, the greater the number of pupttA
th# better the school.
The Hat Is open. If Macon Is to
hare a night school, now Is the op
portunity.
