ern Bell Telephone Co., are at work
endeavoring to agree on the ordinance
conveying the franchise to tho com
pany.
That there seems to he n hitch In

fact that the matter has been hung ur
for several weeks and many confer
ences had. On Wednesday night the par
ties at interest were In session until

Laura T. Ibot, the mother rf the baby
that was found on the river bank a
few mouths ago, wo a acquitted of in
fanticide In the superior court yester
day afternoon. By lawyers and couri
officials, the return of such u verdict
is ascribed wholly to the defense made
by Attorney W. D. McNeil, who put
the burden of proof so completely on
the state that the prosecution »van
unable to establish Its charge. Aa
there was no evidence showing that
the woman actually killed her child,
though circumstantial evidence point,
ed to such a fact, the Jury was not
long In returning -a verdict of “not
guilty.”
The woman being well known among
her race, and the circumstances attend,
ing her arrest of a somewhat sensa
tional nature, the court room was
crowded with negroes throughout the
trial. The case was also of great In
terest to members of the bar on ac
count of the line legal points Involv
ed and the brilliant defense nlado bv
Lawyer McNeil.
' During the afternoon tho court was
occupied with the case of Murtln Huf-
flcld.j charged with hurx’ary. The
Verdict of tho Jury will 1/ announced
at today’s session of court. Ho was
tried at tho Inst term of court on the
charge of highway robbery, but was
acquitted.
