Hmmswcc. Advertiser: We Mm ha..
several inquiries lately for Information
concerning the improvements going on in
our harbor, and wo aro glad to be able to
speak encouragingly of this work, which
has been quietly going on for some time.
It has been previously staled that already
eighteen inches have been added to tire
depth of water opposite our wharves. In
addition to the construction of a line of
'rib-jetty for the maintenance of a deeper
channel, dredging operations have tx-ea
carried on with a view of ectablisbinz an
improved navigable channel eighty feet in
width and twclvo feet in depth at mean
low water, aud with the aid of the jetty
work, this channel will undoubtedly be
kept open, and its depth will, no doubt, be
increased gradually by tho current, which
lias been thrown on this side of the river
by the return face of the .'city. General
Gillinare proposes to construct a training
wall, or lino of jetty, about 4,000 feet ir.
length, running parallel with the Bruns
wick shore line, aud about 1,000 feet from
it, though with ibe funds now available,
it is calculated that only about 1,000 to

It was developed that by the slalislics
of the United States Agricultural Depait-
ment the value of all the stock iu the

wss £*J,4QJ,'y£>, and the cost of the fenc
ing wpa $21,1110,870, thus disclosing the
astounding lad tbit more than ten
do'iars is spent In building fences to keep
out one dollar’s worth of stock. The
South Carolina counties of Spartan
burg, Anderson, Union, and others
have abolished fences aud have a
stock latf-' which grows yeaily in greater
1 favor with farmers. The present law
is wholly In favor of the few block raiscre,
aud altogether opposed to the Interests of
the laud owner, the renter and the la
borer. Bibb county is a cotton growing,
not a stock raising county, and the enor
mous expense of keeping up our feuccs to
keep out a few scrub cattle, should be dis
continued. These wero a few of tho
points presented In the discussion. It
