Americas,
July 4.—The ooanty convention to-day
elected Hon. Alien Fort, Hon. J. H.
Blrck, Hon. W. H. Davidson andJ.O-
Rooney Esq, delegates to the State conven.
tion. They favor tho nomination of Ste
phens for governor. The convent’on alio
declared in favor of the majority rule.
The election of Stephens delegatee from
tlita coaoty is mainly dae to two causes,
first a good many good Democrats refrain
ed from voting in the nomination because
they would not bind themselves to vote for
Stephens, should he be nominated. The
other eause was the active war made on
the Legislative record of Hon. A.O. Bacon.
It waa charged that be defeated, or caused
the defeat of what was known a« (he Gnerry
bill before the last Legtslatere. The ob-
, eet of this bill was to relieve Americas
from freight discriminations, and of
course such a charge, coming from
a reliable source, had great local effect
against the opponents of Stephens, aa Ba
con was tbe only other name prominently
before our people. The convention to-day
made no recommendation as to Gongrets-
nan at large.
A negro brick mason fell from the top
f Sheffluel’s new buildingyvsterday, strik
ing a wheelbarrow of brick. Tha fall waa
a long one, but our latest advices are that
it will, probably, not prove fatal.
The news received to-day that Coffee
county had elected Cook delegates to the
Congressional convention waa a great sur
prise to the friends of Judge Crisp, as they
ere anre of that oonnty. Crisp (■ making
very active canvass, and getting in a'l the
work possible before the adjournment of
Congress. This connty will elect delegates
to the Congressional convention on the
first Tuesday in August.
