The accounts of the commencements of a
State institution xro apt to bo less tinged
with doxomania than those of other insti

person feels that the institution to s cer

Before I forget it, let me tell you a bit
of good news that I got from Major Mc
Cracken. He says (bat on Saturday ho
will commence running a train to Indian
Bpring, which will return early Monday
morning. The train will leave the cross
ing at the city bridge at fi o’clock every
Saturday afternoon, meet the down train
from Atlanta at Holton, and arrivo at the
spring at 7 o'clock, in time for snpper.
Tnis 1 know will be good news to many
who want to slip away from the hot town
on Saturday night and spend Sunday in
the cool woods, or lo enjoy a weekly chat
with the loved ones who have probably
taken up summer quarters at the spring.
It is thus seen that the Major is deter
mined to leave no atone unturned to ao-
ootumodate the traveling public.
We left Macon at half past eight o dock
on Tuesday on the firefe passenger train
orer the rails of the new road between Ma
con and Atlanta. Conductor Tom Ware
assured ns on his word of honor that theie
was absolute safety in tho trip, and that ho
would see that the grave was kept gr^en,
and thus consoled wa became one of s
ojaob of passengers who, like us, wanted
some of tho glory of being on the first
train.
We bowlel through tho cemetery and
then drank in the scenery along tho routo.
Tnure was just the least bit of a threat (of
rain, and ifaesuu being somewhat ob
scured, gave too foliage along tin river
a rich dark green that contrasted

ses of tho river. For the forty miles the

work on tho upper portion and all haste is
being made.
Tickets will be placed on sale at Burr
Brown’s on Monday to all point* from Ma-
oon to Atlanta, or Macon to Brunswick.
The conductors arc Meters. Tom Ware
r.nd Frank Held. These gentlemen are
thorough railroad met, and are always
mindful of the oomfort of the passenger*.

Practical Business (Senae lu Farming.
Onr enterprising banker, Mr. I. G. Plant,
who is noted for hD financial acumen, is
making an application of hia financial tact
to farming. Within a twelvemonth he has
oooomplished what most fanners thought
impossible. Hie farm is just about three
mites from the city, in the rlvor swamp.
He believed whoa be purchased it that
there was money in it, and by applying his
practical good sense to the cultivation of
certain crops he has vindicated his judg
ment.
Last year an outlay of .$5,000 for the land
and lie cleared about filAO. Thi* year lie
will make profit* over $2,000. LiUt year
he devoted his attention to Bermuda gra-i
and field peas. Thi* year he has already
harvested C00 bqshels of oat* and
throshed them out. The straw is all oarc-
folly stowed away for use. He will make
100 tons of hay from his Bermuda
miilot and native grasses. This he sella
read*ly from 90 cento to $1.25 per hun
dred. He has contracts at these figaree
for nil he can fnrnish. After cutting hia
oats, hu planted the ground in corn, which
i* now about three feet high and growing
nicely, and will make a splendid crop. He
wilt plant hia peas, and thus realize three
erope off of the stine ground.
After this year he will abandon oats as
a crop, boliaving, and hh experience
demov .itrute*, there is more money in ths
hay crop, lie has a small patch of herd
and timothy gras* which ia y-rotring ee'j
luxuriantly, and by next eeason will be in
elegant condition. Ho will elao bate a
meadow of veltoh or guinea grass, which
is said to be the most prolific grass crop
for the Sohth, being enabled to eat it four
times a ytar.
Mr. Flatjt has also another crop which
> one bofore ever thought worthy of at
tention. Learning that Mr. Geo. Beggs,
the outerprising grocer of onr city, was
selling from twenty to twenty-five barrel*
of horse-radish every year, he wondered
why it could not t>o raised in thiv country.
He made investigation, and has planted
nearly a quarter of an aore of this vegeta
ble. He ti satisfied that it oan be produced
for lese than half the price it sells for in
the market. I'
after once well
rated.
Tho example of Mr. P>aut has tadaced
other progressive farmers to prepare mead
ows, both of native and imported graves*
and if thi* industry pro*per* a* tt should,
five years hence but little Western or
Northern hay will find its way into our
market. Thoso who dvsira to adopt thia
system ran bo furnished with all necessary
data.

we all feel assured.
The people ot Maoon, by ordinance of |

the public attests. Would it be more of I
benefit than evil if this ordinance was bus- j
pended for sixty dajs and mllkoows allow-1
ed to be at largo until October next ?
Nearly all of the cows in tho city are shut 1
np in amnll cnoloHtm*. Tn allow them |
exercbe improves tho»r health, thus their I
milk ia improved and tendered more I
bealtiiful diet to the families who use it. I
Onr street* are wide, and, in many places (
will afford good pasturage for the next two I
months. To graze thl* rank herbage will I
improve rather than injure the streets. (
Tho cow, gentle and kind, doe* harm to no I

The grass in the ci'y and on tho outskirts (

There can be but few objections to the I

Brown’s Iron Bitters
is one of the very few tonic
medicines that are not com
posed mostly of alcohol or
whiskey, thus becoming a
fruitful source of intemper-.
ancc by promoting a desire
for rum.
Brown’s Iron Bitters
is guaranteed to be a non-
intoxfcating stimulant, and_,
it will, in nearly every ca.
take the place of all liquor,
and at the same time abso
lutely kill the desire for
whiskey and other intoxi
cating beverages.
Rev. G. W. Rice, editor of
the Ameriean Christian Re
view, says of Brown's Iron
Bitters:
Cin.,0.,Nov. t6, xSSi.
Gents:—The foolish watt
ing of vital force in business,
pleasure, and vicious indul
gence of our people, makes
your preparation a necessity;
and it applied, will save hun
dreds who resort to saloons
for temporary recuperation.
•
Brown's Iron Bitters
has been thoroughly tested
for dyspepsia, indigestion,
biliousness, weakness, debil
ity, overwork, rheumatism,
neuralgia, consumption,
liver complaints, kidney
troubles, &c., and it never
(ails to render speedy and
permanent relief
