A GREAT LOG BOAT.
A Nuv Plan to Get Lumber From Canada
to Michigan.

* •* r 8® Cf owd, so much interest has been
taken to the experiment, on which large in
terests depend. The Michigan lumber for-
esls are rapidly disappearing. Millions of
dollars ore invested in the most elaborate
and costly mid plants. These must
either soon be abandoned, must
be removed at great expense, or logs
innst in gome way be brought
to them, from increasing long distances,
r or four or live years past the transporla-
tion of logs by railroad by special trains
constructed for tbo purpose has been a
growing truffle, until now it has assumed
large proportions, and 50 and 100 miles are
not uncommon distances to be covered by
these trains. But oven this resort will have
to be abandoned for want of timber. Within
the past two years Michigan lumbermen
have turned their Attention to Canada, and
extensive purchases of piue lauds have been
made near the shores of Lake Huron and
along the large streams emptying
into that inland sea. To move their
mills to that side of the lake for the
purpose of cutting up the pine iu-
volves great expense. Then, too, they
must encounter the tariff on imported
lumber on seeking an American market. To
somehow get the logs to this side would
solve the difficulty, ah there is no tariff on

Yesterday when Sheriff Westcott time
down town he found a stranger looking for
him. Introducing himself, the stranger
said he was Sheriff Konkin, of Fayette coun
ty, Texas, and thut he waa in Macon for the
purpose of arresting and taking back with
him a fugitive from justice named Ed Har
rington. He exhibited the necessary papers,
such os warrant, requisition paper-, etc.,
together with s proclamation issued by
Qovernor Ireland, of Texas, offering s re
ward for the apprehension of Harrmgton.
Sheriff Westcott offered him every aid in
his power in getting his man. The
Texan said he thought there
would be hut little difficulty iu making his
arrest as he had seen and talked with his
man Bhort a time before. For some time he
had been iu correspondence with Sheiiff
Bussey, of l’ike county, in thia state, who
wrote to him that Harringtou was here in
business and could he easily had.
Sheriff Westcott was puzzled to know who
Ed Harrington was. He knew nearly every
man in town, but Harrington was certainly
one man he didn't know, and what was still
more puzzling was the fact that Harrington
was in business in Macon and so easy to
get. He then questioned the Texan and
found out that he had passed along
Second street and had asked Mr.
Hub Herrington, of the firm of Herrington
ffc Son, the way to the river. As everybody
in Macon knows, tbc shop of tbe Herring
tons is just below tho TLLEulunt office.
Mr, Herrington replied to the qiie-tion by
telling him the river was two blocks below.
The Texan, conscious of talkiug to the man
he wanted, extended the conversation aud
made a mental uote of tho shop aud sur
roundings.
When the Tixan (old this to Sheriff
Westcott, a smile began to play around his
mouth as he thought of what a good joke
he had on Hub, but the Texan waa so firm
that he made baste to convince him
that he had come aii the way from
Fayette county, Tex., after the wrong man.

A VISIT TO IDYL WYLPE.
A Model Farm .ml a Saccei.hil Farmer—
Gorgeous Dleplny.ut Fruit*. Ktc.
Editor Telegraph: Fora long time I had
heard of the farms iu Houston connty, and
of the excellence of one in particol it, the
domains of which are vast and tho appoint
ments, appliances a d adaptations of which
rendered it well nigh pei feet Year after
year, for a series, a certain genial gentle
men lias asked me to go with him down to
Mr. Henry Feagin's and spend a day or
two ou his magnificent farm, but it was
nefer convenient for me till last Saturday,
when, on the announcement that the “Idyl
Wylde” club wouldjhave a fruit display and
a watermelon cutting and so forth, I de
cided to make a break and go.
When we got to our objective point we
found Mr. Feagin busy with his separator,
thrashing the finest-looking Georgia rust
proof oats we ever saw. Ho stopped the
•'boys" at 10:30 o'clook for the day, having
thra.hed about 300 pounds since sun-up.
Notwithstanding the shortage of the grain
crop this season, he made over a thousand
bushels, which lie sells readily at sowing
time at SI a bushel. Iu the morning we
rode over a portion of bis nineteen hundred
acre farm, and a more beautiful and at
tractive-looking plantation we never snw,
It is gray land, aud almost as level through,
out as a table. On a field containing
seventy-five acres he has the best corn we
ever saw in Georgia, exoept on a “fancy
patch " It would averago over ten
test high. There were 2,2u0 stalks
to the acre, which averaged one and
a halt ears to the stalk. We selected
a sample ear aud it measured elevon inohes.
Ninety of such ears would make a bushel.
This field is the famous Feagin dove field,
known to many of Muuon's hunters. It Is
so level that »hen the crop is cut off yon
can stan 1 on one side and sea a hare or a
bird on the opposite side. We saw a brag
fifty-acre ‘ natch" of cotton averaging above
Waist high* which it was thought would
yield a bale to every acre and a half. Mr.
