THE MACON WEEKLY TELEGRAFR. H'ESDA 1 MORNING. aI’KII. J, !SS7.-TWELve RAGES
SOME STRANGE ARRIVALS.
A Wingless Hint unit at) Kgg-lnylng Quad
ruped at the Zoo.
Fblladtlpbt* Timet.
The rare collection of animals at the Zo
ological garden was yesterday enriched by
two specimens which, if they live, will en
joy the proud di-tinc'ion of haring no
counterparts in this country. The first is
the ephvuisrns demcreue, or 11 ick-footed
penguin, anil the other the ttechyglossuB
bynn, or ant-eating echidna. Tin- first is
a genuine bird that oannot fir and the
other a tenr-footed laud animal that lays
*l'ho pangain van purchased, along with n
mate, in Hamburg, Germany, to which place
they had been taken from South Africa
On the way to the garden the mate died,
and yesterday the wingless bird was warm
ing its milk-white brea»t and glossy black
coat in front of a warm fire. When 'stand
ing up it is 18 inched high, with a Uj-ihcb
bill, and with its flappers, which are nke a
seal's, pressed close to its body, It looks
lige a little soldier on dress parade. Al
though it cannot fly it can hop around on
its feet, which are webbed, like a duck's,
and its flappers with movements similar to
those otpi Kangaroo.
The echidna is considered by naturalists
one of the rarest and most paronliar cre
ations of the animal kingdom. It is the
first cousin of the duck-billed platypus.
The specimen of he Zoo. except a slotted
one at the academy of Npiioual Science,
is the only odb In Amtrica and was brought
direct from Australia, where it wasoaptnred.
Itis abont the size of an ordinary porcu
pine, which it grea'ly resembles, being oov-
clod with long quills, but it has a bill-shap
ed nose nenriy three inches long, from
which protrnd'-s a narrow tongna six inches
in length. Its month is cxceedii gly small
and it baa no teeth. Its legs are abort and
poserial and its feet are armed with thick
daws that can borrow so rapidly that the
animal can almost instantaneously disap
pear in tbe earth. Unlike other burrowing
animals, he bnrrows with nil fonr feet at
once, and-in-teael of going igkesd first he
gracefully sinks into tbo with his
spine curved and bristling with a formida
ble armor of quills.
|. On its right bum leg is a sharp spnr, simi
lar to a fighting cook's, three inches long.
A little canal, connecting with a gland, runs
through it aud keeps it supplied with a
poisonous liquid, which is said to prodnee
instantaneous death. The most peculiar
feature of this atrsnge creature, however,
is that it regularly lays eggs of a dark pnr-
plehue. Superintendent Brown said yes
terday that he was sorry the animal did not
arrive last Saturday, as wat expected, as in
that event it would probably have laid some
nice Easter eggs for tbe Sunday viators.
When on its n&tivs jheuth its diet consists
of ants and other ioseots, but yesterday it
enjoyed a hearty meal of condensed milk
and the white ot sn egg.
The Mexican female deer psve birth to
triplets yesterday morning. One was bom
dead, however. The other two are doing
well. This is the first time that ft deer was
erer known to have three fawns at one
birth. “The father is only a Western
Pennsylvania but h<W puts on more airs
than a Canadian back," add keeper Me-
Cadden.
A Sulinrbln Fire.
Tho barn 'of CoL W. A. Lofton, who
livea i bont two milei out on tbe Houston
road, was destroyed by fire early yesterday
morning.
Col. Lofton was up earlier than usual in
ordt r to see a friend off on the Covington
and Macon train which leaves at 8:15, and
while eating breakfaat was told by a negro
boy, who ran into the house, that the barn
wait on fire. Tbe colonel ran • nt of the
house with the boy, and on seeing the
flames first thought of the horse and Berk
shire hog that were inside tbe barn. Tbo
boy ran Into the horning barn, bat had
much difficulty in getting ont tho horse b r
tbo reason :bat tuv nuiuml
«n. But for this difficulty the colonel's
bnggy and harnee.s would have been laved.
These were destroyed together with a lot of
corn, hay, end other forego, making a total
loeaof abont five hundred dollars on which
there was no insurance. In fact that was
tho only portion ot the property not in
sured.
Tho oolonel ssys he hates the loss of bis
buggy especially, as he was compelled to
walk into town yesterday morning. Ho
hut no idea aa to bow the fire originated.

The preliminary bearing ot Frank Miekle-1 CHianseToN, Inn, April '.1 —There is ly-

yesterday before Justice Poe. Tbe caae 75 years of age, whoso early life, inclusive
first went before Ju lice Freeman, but the , ot love, cnnrteh p a- d marriage, tortus a
accused oljeoted and the case w*a thus
transferred.
The testimony was abont the same as has
already been printed in tbe TxnxunaPB,
with the addition'll evidence that Mickle-
john went into Altmayer's etoro on Thurs
day morning and amnrid three blank Kx-
ebaoge Bank checks. He wan ideutifi id as
the person asking for tbe cheeks.
Considerable time was consumed in argu
ment. B-icon A Rutherford represented
tbe proseo ition and Willingham A Patter
son appear, d for tbe prisoner. The pris
oner’s counsel asked to hive the warrant
dismissed because it was detective, inas
much a-t it charged tbnt thn check was
“signed by depouent,” who was Mr. Abe
Ellis. This motion to dismiss tbe w. iraot
was inado after the testimony bad been
given in. Justice Poo said tbit it
was not* for da.istralea' courts to pass
upon tbe gniit or innocence of tbe ac
cused, but to commit him if the e
were reasonable grounds for tb« belief that
be di commit the crime as charged. He
therefore fixed the bond at *500. Tho hear
ing on the other chtoks will take place to
morrow.
After tho bond had b»en fixed the pn's-
oner's oonosel asked permission tor the < fli
cerg to accompany him to the residence of
his father-in-law that be might se bis wife,
a-ho was dangerously ill. Justice Poe said
that after fixing the bond be hud no power
to direct the officers as to what the; conld do
with tf)p prisoner. He waa therefore taken
back to jail.
During tbe trial Micklejohn, who is rather
a good looking yonng man of pleasant ad
dress, appeared more as an interested looker-
nn than tbe prominent figure in the case.
Bat, in spite of his see mii g indiff-renc , it
could be seen that he was quite uneasy.

Several effete of $1,000 were made for
Mr, Cline’s corner lot which be refused to
take, showing what valne ie put upon tbl
elegaut property. The prices obtained
showed conclusively that the boom contin
ues unabated.

All who apeak or pray in pnblio wonld
do well to look elosely into tbe worda they
use, and ascertain jnst bow many pet
phrases they have. Onr pastor was noticed
never to use the word prosperity withont
adding “perfection and glory." The regn-
lar tracks of thoughts sometimes betray a
speaker. Tana, one of onr ministers,
speaking in tbe pulpit of the late Horace
Cooke, called bias Hortee Oreely, there
being a well worn track that nnited Horace
and Greely. And auother spoke of snffer-

the trucks between garden and Elen being
better worn than that between garden and

weave therefrom an iutertating story. But
it ia just as inter sting to the reader, por-
