Toledo Blade.
Spiritualism is, without doubt, ancient
sorcery, reappearing under a different Durne
but with totally nnobanged characteristics.
And when I tell you that in tho city ol Bos
ton thero is now a magnificent temple for
tbe worship of spiritualism, which, being
interpreted, means for the practice ot de
monology and wUokcraft; when I remind
you that this dark system claims from ten
to twenty millions of devotees, who have
been disciplined within the less than fifty
years of Its modern manifestation, and
when I repeat its proud boast that it has
gone forth unto tbe kings of the earth and
has royal apostles in many ot the thrones
and palaoes of the old world, you will see
that it is no mere insignificant superstition
ntterly unworthy ot notioe. Tne theory
tbit superstition is a Bystem of sheer impo
sition is not the one held now by the most
candid Christian investigators, nor is it the
one most accordant with foot and Scripture.
Our rational age congratulates itself on
having outgrown the belief in -snoh puerile
superstitions. But incredulity is often the
next door neighbor to stupidity; and he
who boasts himself too wise to believe in
the existenoe of evil spirits may be tho
easier prey to their seductions. God and
the devil, toe kingdom of light and toe
kingdom of darkness are both realities,
and in proportion to our belief and realiza
tion of the snpernal will be onr apprehen
sion and dread of the infernal. And not
only ia the reality of fallen spirits distinctly
taught iu scripture, but their power to pro
duce Btartling mtraoles. In Ttiesssloniaus
we are told that "the worktogs of Satan” is
"with all power, and signs, and lying won
ders,” and in th-j Apocalypse we have tho
prediction of “the spirits of demons work
ing miracles.” The man who supposes
that S >tan wonld undermine the belief in
the supernatural is utterly ignorant of bis
devices. Ha has a creed to inculcate and a
code of infernal morality to propagate, and
be wonld employ miracles to authenticate
his doctrines.
Thousands of once professed Christians
who are now iu cue coils of this delusion
were first sounoi ci by toe piea of larger
knowledge and firmer faith concerning tbe
unseen. The ear having been thus gained
for the communications of tho departed,
the instruction bus gone on—no rnde deni
als at first, bat the most soothing plsti-
tndos and the moat subtle counterfeits, till
little by little the system of evangelical faith
has been supplemented by tost soni-de-
stroyirgcreed, "toe doctrine of demons."
I say "of demons,” for I have no question
that what are supposed to be departed
friends speaking from beyond the veil are
in reality fallen spirits, fool, malignant,
end seducing, sent to begnile men into the
allegience and worship of Satan. And here,
as olsewhere, the evil one follows most
closely too divine method—first toaching
through rapping, planobette, and me-
dinmistic writing, and then mira
cles of physical meaning and
materialization to aooredit these tcaohlngs
speaking lies in hypocrisy," and con.
firming tho word spoxen by satanio signs
and wonders following. And frem this
statement turn te the latest claim of Spirit
ualism. That in materialization toe spirits
of the departed now aotnally re-appear,
habited in fiesh and blood, and hold com
munion with their friends, then listen to
toe concessions of some of the ablest Chris
tian investigators of this system, who are
constrained to admit that they have Been

they have handled them with their hands,
