tude sought places in n line. The doors
were th. n opened and for about two hours
the people poured in. This town has
a population of only 12,000 or 13.000
bni tbe surrounding country had sent in its
thousands, and the rtception lack.d noth
ing in tbe way of nan bets.
UFTSB THE RECEPTION
When the reoeption ended Mrs. Cleve
land went at or c» to the residence of Post
master-General Velar, whete she spent the
balance of tbe afternoon in restfni quiet.
The President waa eeooitsd by Gov. Husk
and Col. Vilag to the Dsne county fair
grounds, wheie the farmers and exhibitors
had a eeoond opportunity to see him, and,
after a short delay, be too went to the Vilas
mansion. 1
This evening Ool. and Mrs. Vilas
gave a dinner to the President. I: was a
qaiet affair of twelve or fifteen oovers.
The town decorations are gorgeooly dis
played. Wherever room could be fonnd
upon which to stick a bit of color it has
been utilized, even the telegraph poles bc-
iog wound with ribbons red, white and
bine. Arches are across the maiu streets
at many corners and Chinese
terra, countless os the stars
swing in tbe freah pratiie breeze.
Many float private riBldences bear unique,
tarteful and sometimes costly designs upon
their fronts. The grounds of the V.las
mansion ate brilliantly illuminated by
arobeg of gas jets with colored globes,
while in tbe adornment of tbe bouse itself,
nothing less costly than ribbons of satin
is seen. To-night bands are playing,
troops are marchirg, and tin borna are
tooting in tbe bueioets street, of the town,
bnt in Ihe more eeolud id portion whore the
President is domiciled quirt reign,.
On iho arrival of the presidential train
here this afternoon, the party was acoorded
an enthusiastic reception nnd were escorted
to tbe caphol, where a welcoming addrosa
was made by Judge Cole, chief justice of
Wisconsin.
