Counsel thereupon produoed a letter bear
ing the witness’ own aignatnre, addressed to
complainant, stating that the rates givcu

other. The wilnemi said that that was
written under tho impression that the rates
originally given Mr. Eice ware comet.
Counsel asked bow that could be since the
second letter waa written ia reply to one
from the complainant, quoting the 37 cents
rate and asking if no better terms could be
given and if oihtr shippers were not given
moro favorable rates. Witness replied ss
belore, adding that bo did not at tho time
know the rates and, not doubling that they
had been given correctly, he did not exam
ine them. Witness hod not conclude.] his
testimony when tho commiesion, at 5 p.
m., adjourned.

fire which broke ont last ufgbt in the winter
quarters ot Birnnm A Bailey’s oirens de
stroyed the large main building in which
were stored all the pricclpal animals need
in tbe great show, nearly oil of which were
destroyed, including four elephants, five
lions, seven leopard*, six panthers, four
kangaroos, six horses and a large number
of smaller bouts. Among the elephants
burned were Alice,Ham| sou, and tberaored
white elephant. One large elephant es
