Senator Jnoaixs is writing a novel
After making bo many speeches that
abound iu fiction ho ought to find this
task easy. ,
The Rome Tribune merely suggest*
that Congressman Judson C. Clements

Nobody who knows Mr. Clements doubt?

Marshall Roberts, the 10-ycar-old
son of tho late Marshall O. Roberta of
New York is worth $5,000,000, What a
splendid chance the young fellow has to
make shipwreck in life!
“Old laTcn” has a chance now to
know how it fools. He has been robbed
of $40,000 by a trustod clerk. It will
take the old man nearly a week to repair
such a loss in the present dull stato of
the grain market.

protest against the tyranny of the repub
lican majority in the House of Keprt-

rassed and delayed to some extent in tho
House of Representatives by the want of
a code of rules."
Mr. Vanderbilt is not the only man
outside the state who thinks North Caro
lina lands desirable. Recently 100,000
acres in Caldwell county and 60,000 in
Burke have been purclxased by Northern
and English capitalists. The object of
these purchases has not yet been made
public, but the quantity bought and tho
good prices paid indicate a strong faith
in ths possibilities of tho Old North
Ingersoll on a New Tacli.
Col. Bob Ingersoll 1ms apparently
wearied of attacking tho Christian re
ligion. and Is now agitating tho question
of reform in the treatment of criminals.
Ho delivered an address to the bar aaso-
ciation of New York last Tuesday night
on “Crimes against Criminals,” in which
ho presented some rtartlitm statistics.

Tux Jacksonville Times-Union has
Issued a very handsome trade review.
It contain* fifty-six large pages bound
in e neat cover. The review wes gotten
up with a view to “presenting th* re
sources and attractions of the great state
of Florida” and it serves this purpose ad
mirably. Not only Jacksonville, but all
parts of Uie state ere illustrated in an at
tractive form. Tbs Times-Union lies
reason to be proud of it* trade edition.
Ik almost every state of the union
there is a heeltbv agitation on tho sub
ject of road improvement. In many
states it will mult in a great deal of
practical read work and the permanent
improvement of tbs highways this year.
It is to be regretted that Georgia is not
bestirring herself m this matter,
year witnessed very little improvement
in our roads. This year should not have
a record in this particular which reflects
so discreditably upon us.
Conorusuam Buttuworth fails into
line whenever bis party calls on him to
defend the present tariff with hit vote,
but between times his convictions crop
out very distinctly. Ho proposed this
little conundrum to the ways end means

gress should at once, if it has Uie power,
divide the United State* into six |ports,
so that each one would be able to get
rich by fencing out all competition."
Tax removal of Rev. J. K, Winchester
from Macon is the subject of general
regret. During the several years
rectorship of ChrUt Church ho has ex
erted an influence which extended be
yond tho limits of Ids ow n parish and
caused him to bo held in high regard by
the people of Macon. His ministry here
has been remarkably successful end lie
leaves Christ Church stronger than he
found it. lie leaves Macon to accept
call to one of the meet important
churches in Nashville. The best wkhoa
of a host of frieuda in this city will fol
low him and hk family there end where
soever their lot may be oast.
When electricity began to be generally
used for lighting it was predicted that
gas would soon become obsolete, end the
gas companies bo ruined. Not only lias
this prophecy failed of fulfillment, but
exactly ths reverse has come to pass. In
sjrte of the large expenditures in our
cities for electric lights the consumption
of gas has actually increased jxt capita.
Human nature k greedy. The moro
fight it has the moro it wants. Besides,
it takes more gas to make a fight now in
some cities than it formerly did. The
gasmen seem to be fully able to take
cars of themselves.
Senator Ingalls might find at hk
own home a text for hk assault* on white
men who are swayed by race prejudice.
The republicans of Topeki at the last
rirt in " nominated a negro for county
cleric* Ilk qualifications for the office
were admitted and hk cliaracter was
good; but, while every white man on
the republican ticket was elected by an
overwhelming majority* the candidate
for dark narrowly escaped defeat, sim
ply because be was a negro. A local ne
gro paper declared that at thk election
“ the color line was lightly drawn, end
white republicans made no bones of say
ing that they * would not vote for snigger
under any circumstances.'" Thk inci
dent must have escaped ths memory of
Senator Irgalb when he was making hie
imparuonad pies for ths negro.
Source of suggestion to murderous mobs
and the strength of lynch law*, llede-
clan a against any punishment that de
grades and argues that “a punishment
which degrades the punished will de
grade tho man who inflicta tlio puubh-
ment and tho government that pro-
curoa it.” A mere statement cf this
proposition ho considers sufficient and
does not expend any of bis powers of
logic in effort* to show that it is true.
Alter drawing a very gloomy picture of
Eociety under present conditions and
predicting awful results if tho penal laws
are allowed to continue as they are
lie asks where ths remedy is to be
found. To this inquiry tho reply of Col
Ingersoll is very unsatisfactory. He
says the criminal should be treated with
kindness. “Every right should be given
him, consistent with tho safety rf so
ciety. Ho should neither be degraded
nor robbed. Thu state should set tiio
highest and noblest example. Tho i>o\v-
erful should never bo cruel, and in the
breast of the supremo there should be
no dejire for revenge,” Another thing
needful, he says, is tho increase of edu
cational facilities, but hu does not ex
plain why it i* that tho ratio of crimi
nals is greater now than it was forty
years ago, in spite of tho fact that edu
cational facilities have been vastly im
proved. Poverty, Col. Ingersoll truly
says. Is a great breeder of crime, and he
proposes a sovereign euro for it. “Th*
peoplo must have more homes. Tho
uuui* fusivi* »u Uio vuiuvnnuuis u>«
safety of society. The more homes,
tho more patriots, the more virtue, tho
more security for all that gives worth to
life.” Just how the number of Koines
is to be increasnl Col. lugersoll does not
explain. True, ho says that no man
should bo allowed to liold more
than 160 acres of land; and If
refuses to sell the excess
lie should bo compelled to do so at s
prico to be fixed by appraisement. But
lie does not show how tho homeless and
landless millions are to obtain the means
to buy the land of which he would strip
large proprietors. There k always
plenty of land for sals in this country,
and it k easy enough for those wbohsvs
the money to get it. No scheme, exoept
communism, offers any way by which
tho moneyless roan can becomo a landed
proprietor and a householder.
Col. IngtrsoU's speech 1* a sentimental
lament over conditions wblch all admit
to be evil and which oil good men would
be glad to improve. Iiut, os a practical
discussion of these evils, the speech k n
miserable failure. Worse than that, it
advocate* a relaxation of tho criminal
code to a degree that would, in effect,
giro license to crime and cause a fright
ful increase in the number of criminal*;
it k full of the poison of socialism, a*
well as the sweets of universal sympathy.
No possible good can come of such a
spccdi. It conveys no suggestion which
con help sny of the classes for whom it
k a plea, and it abound* in sentiments
which round well as rhetorical platitudes,
but which, reduced to practice, would
result In great mischief to government
and scoiriy.

Prof. Willet believes that thk line also

tion of artesian wells is comparatively
easy from that in which it it almost im
possible. Experiments have proved that
it is comparatively easy td get artesian

Baltimore &un recites Uie history of the
origin of the word tariff, but it is a scrap
of history which ought to be made as
familiar as possible. As tho Sun well
rnys, the origin u: tiio word is ot a piece
w itli the working of that for which it
stands in thk country at the present
time. In the yoiur7it) Turif-ibu-Mahrk,
a Moorish private, landed on the coast of
Srtoin tw enty-one mile* southwest from
Gibraltar, and there set up thu first cus
tom house. He levied x tax on all ship*
that passed through tho straits of Gib
raltar. When a passing merchant re-
fused to pay the percentage demanded,
ho wav | rumptly beheaded. By appro
priating things that belonged to other
people Tar if prospered and grew rich.
