Washington, Feb. 6.—[Hpecial.]—
There was a sensational scene in the
executive session of the Senate this
afternoon when Edmunds endeavored to
resign from the committee on foreign
relations on account of the slighu put
upon him in connection with the Samoan
treaty. When this treaty was ratified
Thursday, Edmunds, who did not think
it properly maintained our guarantees
under tho treaty of 1878, moved to re
consider the vote by which the treaty
was ratified. To-day iu executive ses
sion ho called up his motion, and urged
it on tho ground that proper provisions
had not been made in the treaty nego

Therefore, John Sherman, chairman
of tho committee on foreign relations,

I^ndon, Feb. A—An explosion oc
curred today in a colliery at Abtrsheau,
Monmouthshire, ten miles northwest of
Newport. Threo hundred miners were
imprisoned and for several i-ours no
communiaitton could be had wim them.
An opeiti ig was finally effected and at
neon 3j0 of them had been rescued,
number of those taken out aro severely
injured. Up to 4 o'clock this afternoon
forty bodies had been taken out of the
i inea Fiityormor* sti.l remained in
the mines. Tho oxvners of the mines ea
timate that 120 lives have Leen lost.
LIKE A VOLCANO IN ERUPTION.
The cause of tb& explosion waa the
flooding of a pit adjacent to that in
which the explosion occurred. By the
flooding of lbase, pita the gas was dis
lodged and f. rced into the pit where
w ork was in progress and there it was
ignited and exploJed. There must have
been a great quantity of gas, as the ex-
K los.on nad tremendous force. It was
card at a di-tancoof miles. All the
gearing in the fbaft was thrown into tne
air as if from the mouth of a volcano
and simultaneously a Tast, bright volume
of flame shot uoward, fol.owed by
dense, heavy co u no of smoke.
The first party of re*cuers organized
end-arored to enter through tho old
workings.
OROUPS OF DEAD HEN.
They got far enough to l<e able to see
groups of dead men, but they could not
reach them and were compelled to re
treat bv the suffocating volumes of
•moke that aroee in that direction. Up
on the first appearance of diminution in
the voiutuo of smoke the rc*cuor» went
down the main shaft and reached the
scene of the catastrophe. They rescued
a large number of miners yet alive, but
all very tadly burned, ani they brought
out sixty dead bodies nearly all so muti
lated that recognition of their identity is
impossible. The latest eatimato of tho
dead is 150.
