Bat It Was the Cause of 6100,000 Dam
age to the Confederacy.
A well known rlverman who lives In
Jeffersonville recollects this story of tho
wsr; “It’s a joke,” ho said, "butitoosii
the Confederacy n cool 1100,000. The
Confederates had sunk nnd captured thu
Federal monitor Indlanola it the head of
Hurricane Island, some few miles below
Vleksbnrg. It was at the tlmo tha navy
was attempting to run tho Vicksburg bat
teries. A lieutenant of artillery, with a
■qnad of men In charge of the boat, had
been lefcwhtle they sentback to Bod river
for assistance to raise the vessel. In the
meantime the joke was planned. Who tho
originator was la not known, but Ad
miral Porter iccclvcd tha credit.
“A bogus ram was built. On an enor
mous log raft was erected a superstructure
that resembled a terrible lrobolsd. Fence
rails and lioords were used to make an
Imitation Ironclad casomate gunboat.
Guna’ protruded, (ton MM ports, and
pork barrels stacked high served for uhlin-
nsys. Underneath them a hearth of earth
bad beon matlo. Fires were built of fuel
which made the blackest of smoke. With
out engines, gun or cr. w this bugaboo
was set adrift a fow miles 'above Vicks
burg. On carao tho ‘monster.’ Within
an hour It had reached thoclty. Clouds of
smoke rolled oat of its chimneys, and ns It
was just breaking day, tho tlino when
both sides anticipate >1 an attack, the Con
federate sentries detested tho demon.
There was o hurryinghml ekurrylng, but
not 11 shot broko tin 1 stillness until tho
dummy linil rcachi d n point blank rango.
Vicksburg will nevor bo pwakened by
another nol-c. It lasted an hour.
Shota raked It and hulled it, but it still
flontod defiantly. At last the current
swept It nearer to tha shore. Then tho
besiegers read In rudely tnndo letters on
on* side, ‘Scoosh inld.’ On %b* oilier aide
vmro tho letters, ‘Confederate states mall
packet.’
“In the meantime thedlschnrgoof artil
lery had warned the lieutenant In charge
of tholndlanoln that the Jumr for action
was nt band. In his Imagination the lieu
tenant saw gunboats gnloro belching forth
death end destruction, fto would not per
mit the enemy to recapture the Indlanola.
Hastily placing all the powder ho had In
tho turrets of the monitor, bo oppllcd a
slow match and retreated. Only a few
moments elapsed, nnd nil that remained
above decks of the Ironclad wav a mass of
debris. About that time the dreaded ■ gun
boat’ came sailing by and ran on ton sand
bar a short distance below.
The Indlanola could hare been raised
not at ail.
Pretty Mereelena controlled herself ns
best ehn oould and In a moment-of loneli
ness consented to attend a ball with a for
mer lover, Sonor Fllipe, who had sworn to
himself that she should never marry an
other man. But of this the New Mexican
girl was quite unconscious She arrayed
herself for the ball In an elaborate danc
ing skirt of gay striped stuff, embroidered
In many colored beads and sliver sequins
In strings down the breadths. Her dainty
feet were Incased in soft kid moccasins,
for this was an occasion when she wore
her tribal dress, and sho carried the oosta-
nets bequeathed to her by her Spanish
mother. So accoutered she accompanied
Senor Fllipe.
That night Marcelenn was, as minal, the
belle of the ball. It was not at all sur
prising that the should accept the homage
showered upon her, but her heart was not
In It, anil st midnight she stepped to the
open door of tho dancing hall, and looked
fnr over tho shining plain, and thought
of her lover lying in tho ward of tho hos
pital, perhaps dying under that same glori
ous moonlight. Blanca, her friend, had
taken the hut dance for her, and she step
ped oat to breathe tha weloome tonlo of
the night air.
Some one wattlnglng''EI Borrachlto,"
giving the refrain In English, badly bro
ken:
“And a passion fnr a woman caused It all."
The Borrachlto—“tho man who Is a lit
tle drunk”—wu the oavallar FUlpewbo
had brought Marcelenn to tho ball, and
who wn.v now ready tn tnko her home,
swung to tho ismo saddle, a mode of con
veyance not only proper, but popular
among the Pueblos. Ha had lighted her
olgnrctto and was looking Into her eyos
with that dashing, daring audacity which
was her meed of homage. She curled her
red Ups Just a little at bis too ardent gaze,
blit bo was accustomed to that—only tharo
was that In hla mind tonight of which
sho knew nothing.
Tho rest of the company were out
watching tho pair on the fleet Mexican
horse.
“Some day,” says onaot tha rejected,
“he will run away with her!"
‘‘That fiery Fllipe—no. She Is too tame.
Hs knows she will marry tha Yaukcs
schoolmaster—poor little one”
Tho flash of silver on the girl's dress
dazzled their eyes In tho moonlight. She
wore enough sllver croeaea nnd strands of
beads to buy a dozen pardons
Her hnndsonie arms clasped the cavalier
Fllipe, but not too cloeely, she was in a
hurry to get home to pray for her
“Jamei."
