Atlanta, Feb. 2.—(Special.)—City At.
torney Anderson, who will conduct tho
Investigation of City Detectives Cm on
XVrlght and Looney to begin on Mon
day before the police commission, to
day filed a highly sensational amend
ment to the specifications against the
detectives.
The new charge also involve* the
office of the solicitor of the city court.
It has long been the practice In At-
lonia to drag the unfortunate women
of the town Into court periodically and
tmpooe on them ilnea ranging from »let
up. The courts do not claim that the
"ble-illng" process lessens the evil In
the least dogre.'. but still the practice
ha* gone on. Under the law establlsh-
iag the city court that tribunal has
the same Jurisdiction ln three casts
as the superior court, and, while ln
th.* superior oourt the power did not
foil directly ln a Vump Into the pockets
of the ofllcera who prcueCufed mum.
formerly a portion at these coses were
disputed oi at uiut tribunal. For some
time past it lx alleged that the bulk of
tbolr bustnere tub 'been wuriced up
ttarough the city courn iwhere the
money squeezed out of the unfortunate
women as fines goes directly Into the
coffers of the solicitor.
The charge now made, by City At
torn, y Anderson Is that there has been
a specific contract between the detect
ives and Solicitor Thomas bearing upon
the prosecution of this and other
classes of case*. It Is alleged that (he
detectives have been receiving 85 pur
case made, and that consequently they
have devoted a* great part of their
time to turning gamblers, lewd wi-'iien,
etc., into the city court hopper, to the
mutual profit of themselves and the
solicitor.
Whether there Is anything ln this
charge of collusion or not the Investiga
tions which murt now be hid along
that lino will doubtless dlaclos* a con
dition of affairs that will flnal'iv result
In some needed reforms. , , ,
Solicitor Thomas had al-ea.1v denied
that there te any foundation In fact
f,,r tho charge, and he will undoubted
lv undertake to defend hla onto* before
tile- .board.
City Attorney Anderson also Mis
another new charge to the already
long list agtlnst the detective*.
He cite* the c.i*»- of a young nmn
ramet Prouty who paid 825 to the
detectives to settle a case for gaming
against him, but which money appears
never to have found It* way Into the
city treasury.
