Roy Lanier, from down in the Alta maha river section, came in last week to meet his brother, who co mes from Tfew York on a visit. Guano is beginning to come in al ready. The County School Board met Tues day and nearly all of the members were present. The Board is getting right down to business now and nearly nil the schools in the county are run ning full time. Sheriff Thompson finished serving all the papers fur the February term of court last Saturday, lit 1 had to hus tle too as this term is going to be a dandy. Over a hundred suits are filed for this term Mr. Findley, from up near Oak Park Stas taken an interest with C. J. Phil lips in th e green grocery business. He is a splendid young fellow and we are jglad to have him as a resident and lo cal merchant. I. Q. Oolman and W. C. Oliver, direc tors of the W. A. L. railroad, went to Adrian Wednesday to attend a call ed meeting. This meeting is of much importance as it is the final meeting to «ign up the papers for the bond issue. People who sent in communications for or against the county bond issue will remember that the reason we did not give them space in our columns was because the election was called off. We are not to have any bond election and as a consequence there is no need to discuss the matter. \\ e went out in the northern end of the county the other day and we have never seen as much improvement in a section of country as we found out there, and all this improvement has I been made in the last few months. The ! good people up in that section nave as ! tine land as can be found in the county and they are certainly taking it in too. | Dr. E. P. Komar tells us that he has given the order for cement and other material for a concrete building to be erected on the two lots adjoining the stare of F. B. Cook on the west. The building is the first of the kind to be erected in the city and it is to be a handsome structure too. Work will be started on the building just as soon as the material arrives. Messrs. “Bub” and Charley Cum mings, who are now making their home *a Hampton county, S. C., were in the city this week visiting at the home of the Grimes Brothers. The Cummings hoys were ia Lyons about 5 years ago, ijeing interested with their mother in the large mill east of the city. They ire now in the automobile business in S ruth Carolina and we are glad to Waow that they are doing well. Corn Contests Getting Popular. Several business houses thioughou the state are taking interest in the corn contests, some of them are offer ing valuable prizes. The Vidalia Hard ware Company is one among the num ber and we understand that one or two firms in Lyons are going to supplement the offer. We are glad to see the busi ness men taking interest in the raising of food stuff and we hope the farmers will take up the proposition. Substantial prizes are being offered for the greatest yield of corn on one acre of land and the counties mention ed so far are Toombs, Emanuel and Montgomery, fn some parts of the state the prizes are only offered to boys but the prizes offered in Toombs county are for farmers generally. We have the land in the county of Toombs that will pioduce corn equal to any land in the country and we see no reason why a record should not he made by our farmers. We can’t give the prizes that are to be offered in Lyons yet but will do so in our next issue. The Vidalia Hardware Com pany, however, is offering as first prize, SSO in cash ; as second prize, a disc plow valued at $35; and as third prize, a line range. The prizes offered in Lyons will be equally as good and the prises will make it worth while for the farmer to show what can be done on Toombs county soil. Get busy, friends, and see what can be done Mardi Gras Excursion Kates. The Seaboard Air Line will sell low rate excursion tickets to New Orleans, La., and return Feb. 21st to 27th, good returning until March 11th 1911. Lim it extended on payment of SI.OO until March 27th. For full information, see nearest ticket agent or write, R. H. Stansell. A. G. P. A. Savannah, Ga. Mr. D. E. Ou mu, a brother to Dr. W. W. Odom, dreve around to the Meth odist parsonage Wednesday afternoon, and Rev. N. T. Paford officiating, he took unto himself a bride. Miss Anna Belle Coleman, the accomplished daughter of Mr. J. T. Coleman, was the bride elect and the witnesses were very few. The bride and groom are botli members of prominent Toombs county families and the union is one that is looked upon with much favor. The Progress extends hearty congratu lations. The Altamaha Fertilizer Factory at Vidalia is now at work and they are making a fine grade of guano. They are out for business too and in our next issue they are going to tell the people about their product. This is a home concern and it should be given the preference of the people. This year the factory will only be able -to mix its grades of guano fait by the next season they hope to be able to manu facture all the acids and other chemi cals they will use. Col. Giles came back from Savannah Tuesday night after assisting in the prosecution of Brunswick Mcßae for the killing rs Zenas Warness, in Bry an county. The negro had been con victed twice but it seems that a Chat ham county jury thought that he was not guilty and they turned him loose. This is one cast* where a negro that murdered a white man was given his f reed o m Judge Mason expects to receive the money to pay off the pensioners in a week or ten days. It is rumored that this money will fie sent out from At lanta by the 20th and we are anxious that the old soldiers get what is coming to them. Who are going to >*e ready to take roomers and boardt-is during the two weeks of court? It is going to be a busy term and every home in the city that can spare a room should offer it to take care of our guests. The first tar fi fa to be advertised this year comes out in this issue of the Progress and it seems that very few will lie advertised this year at all. Mr. Harden is making a dlean sweep before he finishes up his work. W. W. Osborne, one of the leading lawyers in South Georgia, was in Ly . ons Wednesday taking testimoney in a case between the firm of Garbutt & | Donovan and the Toombs County Bank. _______ __ Miss Ellen Wimberly, who has been visiting friends and relatives in and I around Bartow for the past few weeks, has returned home much to the delight of her many friends. Miss Maud Smith, one of the teach ers in our school, has been on the sick list this week and we hope to see her at her post of duty again very soon. P. H. McNatt, a prominent and hust ling Cedar Crossing merchant, was in the city Wednesday on a business trip. E. M. Wimberly went to Savannah Tuesday on a short business trip, re turning home on the evening train. Mrs. G. W. Lankford went to Savan nah the first of the week to have her eyes treated by a specialist. Col. W. E. Brown weut to Vidalia Wednesday to attend Justice court. THK i.YOMi PROOF. FEBRUARY 10 I*ll.
