Perhaps you have never given much con=
•ideration to their purchase, but think for a minute of the long days
the little ones must 6peud in using them, and how muh pleasure and
satisfaction it means if everything is just like they want it.
Something that does not suit is a keen dis=
oppointment, and now is the time that your children are forming
habits and ideas that will have a great influence on their futures.
Failure to equip them with the proper supplies is au actual
handicap.
We have taken all of these features into consideration in buying
•ur school supplies, and the children will receive the same price*, if
they come alone, as you do.

Women in Portugal.
A g >od part of the farm work is
performed by women, who see no
reason why they should regard dig-,
ging, hoeing ai d plowing as the
work ot men alone The man who !
owns a few acres of land will often
leave its cultivation to his wife
and daughters, while he labors as
carpenter, stonemason or cooper,
for caskmaking is one of their im
portant industries. He also likes
to get a job as waiter in one of the
numerous hotels at seaside resorts,
for the country has thousands of
continental and English visitors.
Women share in the heavy work
of the cities as well. There are fe
male porters, laborers on the docks
and market tenders and even wo
men coal heavers,fisherwomen and
sailors They are as strong and
hardy as their husbands and broth
ers and seen to stand long hours
and hard labor as well.
Os course it rather takes away
the glamour of romance when one
sees a young woman with finely
chiseled features and beautiful
black eyes, digging with a spade
and mattox or heaving a basket of
coal into a ship’s hold with just as
much ease as the American girl
plays tennis and golf. Women
seem happy under what we would
consider hard conditions, so the
reformer would probably have his
labor for his pains if he suggested
a change in this department of
Portugeese national existence.—

The Mao who Thinks He’s “It.”
In the course of time nearly all
of us run across a man who thinks
he’s better than his associates.
When he meets new people he
can’t down that impression. In
his every-day life he feels he’s bet
ter than the people he meets, and
his “snobbishness’’ permeates all
his actions.
This man tops the list of that
classification in Daniel Webster’s
book spelled “Fool.”
This trait holds men down. They
can make only a limited quota of
friends, they can advance only to
a certain dpgree of success, and in
this great age of broad minded
men they artn’t far outstripped
by the man who lies, cheats and
robs.
The biggest, broadest and best
men that one meets every day in
this wide awake twentieth century
are “common pecple.”
If they ran across the old hound
they used to hunt rabbits with
when boys, they haven’t grown so
much bigger that thev couldn’t
stop anywhere and pat him on the
head just as they would il he
would “tree” game for them.
The mail who can’t be natural,
stay on earth and meet his fellow
men on an equal basis ought to
learn how to be just an every day
American man, for he’s missing
one of the greatest pleasures in
life.
