A Rough R< ■ 1.
The editor of a country newspaper in
a small city certainly leads a strenu
ous life He has to be a thorough ath
lete to be able to side step some of the
local issues and yet do his duty to his
people. He is expected to express his
views on all public questions and if
these views don’t happen to please
some of the leading citizens he is
threatened with a boycott. Os course
the expression that has displeased this
branch of his supporters has pleased
the other side and they hand him a
boquet now and then for a short time,
but another question comes up and he
gives his side and advice. Lo, and be
hold the soene changes. Hig pseudo
friends are then down on him like a
thousand of brick and another boycott
is in order. Now two factions have it
in for him, but he still has a few left
who will believe him right.
The third stanza comes in when he
fails to mention one good merchant
' and happens to leave a competitor out.
1 This, however, he can patch over in
’ his next issue by giving the compet
itor a jollying. In towns where the
people are religiously divided he has
. a harder time than ever.
. The writer has been working for Ly
, ons nine long years, done everything we
i knew how to do to help build up the
city, and in that work we have prob
ably made some enemies. We know
that we have been boycotted by a few
and there are others that are not pleas
ed, but if these people will look at
things right they will see that we have
never made a suggestion that would
have hurt our little city.
We have decided to be even more
plain in our work than ever before and
; we are going to put it up to our people
where they are doing wrong. We have
too much division in our ranks and we
must get rid of this divsion . If we have
people that try to keep up this division
lets get to work systematically and try
to get such people to move to more con
genial communities. Droans are not
needed in any community and mis
chief makers are not needed at all.
Those who do not like the city should
he given assistance to move out, as
they belong to thedroan class, and they
prevent others from coming together.
Let’s get busy friends, and make
Lyons what it should be a live busi
ness center. If you think your editor
is holding you down, speak out and we
will step back and aside. What we want
is for all to work together as we did a
few years ago.
Card of Thanks.
We take this method of thanking
generally the friends who so kind
ly came to our assistance during the
sickness and demise of our husband
and father. All of you, friends, were
good and kind to us and we were not
suffering for attention. God, in his in
finite wisdom, has seen fit to take
from us our loved one, and we will
bear that loss with fortitude, but we
will never forget the friends that were
so kind to us and we will always be
glad to render any assistance to them
that should happen to lay in our pow
er May God bless you all, keep you
right and in the narrow path, so that I
when you are called to your reward j
you will be able to meet the one just j
gone, Who will in person express his I
thanks in no uncertian words. Again
thanking you on the part of ourselv
es, we beg to be able to always call
you friends.
Very respectfully,
Mrs J. P. Pughsle’ . Sr., and Family.
Litttle Dewey Clifton Collins.
Little Dewey Clifton Collins has gone
from my sight but not from my mind.
I feel that 1 shall soon be with him,
when we will part no more.
Two little hands lay over his breast,
Two little feet laid down to rest,
Dear little hands oft reached out to me,
Dear little form sat on my knee.
• 111, those little hands lay over his breast
Two little feet laid down to rest,
Two little eyes in slumber closed,
J How our hearts bleed none but God I
knows
One little voice that prattled in love,
Now is singing with angles above;
Still in the mansion bright and fair.
Up above the golden stair.
There he is waitingand watching for me
When I shall cross the dark rolling sea ;
| One little voice is singing to me,
Yes,l’m waitingand watching for thee.
