Lyons Defeats Yidalia.
The smaller boys of Lyons, the sec
ond nine they call themselves, met the
same class team from Yidalia on the
local diamond last Friday afternoon
and they had a very interesting game
of ball. The Lyons team had not prac
tised at all, while their opponents have
been playing all the season, but not
withstanding this fact the game came
our way, our boys winning by a good
margin. M. Clifton was the hurler for
Lyons and the Vidalia boys could not
touch him, but those Yidalia boys had
a good pitcher, too, and all the runs
that were made were more or less on
account of errors.
The young boys growing up in the
two towns are going to have strong
ball teams and they play quiet games.
The elder boys should take lessons
from the boys. A large crowd went out
to see the game last Friday and all
who went say they enjoyed the play
ing The writer did not attend the
game but we are glad to say our boys
won and we hope they will keep up the
team, practice once and awhile and
give us more good games before the
season is out.
That Toombs County First Bale.
Mr. Editor: —Vidalia will no doubt
brag about the first bale of new cotton
of the 1911 crop but I want to state
facts about this “first bale” so that the
people will see what tactics were used
to get it.
The news had gotten out in some
way that I would get odt a bale in a
day or so and some of the wise ones de
cided that I should not get this honor
this time, so they got busy and I am
told that a certain citizen of Yidalia
went to J. M. Taylor’s place and got a
few pounds, to the Foss place and got
a little more and also to a place be
longing to J. VV. Poe. When all of the
cotton was ginned the bale weighed
308 pounds, and on the side we heard
it did not weigh so much This is not a
merchantable bale of cotton if they did
hunt the country over to beat me. I
am going to have a bale before this is
published and it will weigh 450 and 1
claim that it u ill be the first bale of
cotton of the 1911 crop unless some one
else gets in ahead of me. Yours for
fairness in all things.
