Unde Sam’s Sweet Tooth.
Do yo\j that you ate about
eighty pounds of white refined
sugar last year? Yes, that is true
even though your account books
do m tahow up that way. Statistics
that are above suspicion show that
each one the ninety millions of
United States citizens consumed
eighty pounds of sugar in twelve
months.
Our hotels, cases, dining cars
and steamships, or what is known
as the hotel trade, buy and use a
million dollars’ worth of sugar
every week. And with all the
astute and searching investiga
tions being conducted to-day in
the interests of health, sanity
and posterity, not a voice is lifted
m protest against this wholesale
consumption of sweets. Quite on
the contrary, noted and reliable
medical "nthoriues come boldly
forth a <1 proclaim the gospel of
sugar eating.
An important factor in the con
sumption of sugar is the fact that
its use is limited only by the
means for securing it. Countries
and individuals eat according to
their health. All consume as
much sugar as they can get hold
of. The English-speaking people
eat the most, as is shown by the
extremely rapid increase of ratio
in the per capita consumption dur
ing recent years. In 1822 each
individual consumed a trille less
than nine pounds of sugar, while
in 1906 to the per capita consump
tion amounted to 67 pounds, an
increase of 76 pounds in 84 years.

801 l Weevil Doing Little Damage.
Careful inquiry among leading
planters of Hindes, Madison Ran
kin, Simpson and Yazoo counties,
comprising that group as Central
Mississippi counties in a radious
of fifty or sixty miles of Jackson,
Miss., develops the fact that up to
the present time the boil weevil
has no damage; that a consider
ably less number of them have
been noticed than usual, and that
the cotton crop is making mar
velous strides since the turn to
diversified farming.
All unite in saying that
that cotton is in better shape than
they have seen it in years. Dur
ing the dry period the fields were
gotten absolutely clean and the
ground well tilled; and also dur
ing that time the cotton plants
got well established and develop
ed a large root aera in search of
moisture. When that moisture
came in abundance the stalks grew
as if bv magic, and it is believed
now that,before the weevil c n
multiplv in sufficient numbers '..e
bolls will be too large for them to
penetrate, and that a most satis
factory crop will result. Farmers
are also being unusually careful
and fields are gone over each day
aud the squares infested with
weevil larave are being collected
and burned —lnland Farmer,
