LYONS, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1911.
Additional Locals.
No gums wardens have y<-t boon
announced for Toombs county. It
seems that State Warden Mercer
wants the people to meet in a
mass meeting and recommend the
warden, and if it is necessary, we
should get busy in Toombs.
Contractor Adams brought a
force of men down from Vida ! ia
Tuesday morning and he is now
husiiv engaged finishing up the
new Coleman building. This build
ing is going to lie a fine one and
it is to be sis ed up especially for
a hardware store.
Our road superintendent Geo.
McLeod is repairing the roads of
the county just as fast as the work
can be none George is a good one
and he ia taking hold of road-work
like an old experienced road build
er. He has To! Parker with him
as work boss, however, and Toi
knows how to build roads.
Saturday is what - was called a
busy day in Lyons. Cotton began
coming to the gins long before
daylight and at daylight and tt
seven o’clock there were at least a
hundred bales to be ginned. L>>t.s
that had already been ginned
came in during the day making
making the receipt, here consider
ably over a hundred bales.
The ice business has been worry
ing our people again . Mr Grant,
it seems, being unable to supply
the demand . Ice is a necessity in
Lyons now and some
must be made so that, o people
can get it at all times! «Y‘- would
suggest the erection of a plant.
It would be a paying n v‘ -sment
and then our people \> n l not
have to suffer for ice.
Paul Cowart was here >ast Sat
urday and he went to Savannah
on the afternoon train. We under
stand that he met Miss Mollie
Godwin in Savannah aud that
they were quietly married. Paul
is not a bad boy at all and the
Progress extends to him and his
fair young bride hearty congratu
lations They are now at Gruy
mont, where Paul is living.
YY r e are requested by Mrs Belle
jEverlvn, the President, to say
that the Local Chapter, U. D C-,
will hold its regular meeting Fri
dav. September 22nd, at the home
of Mrs. L. L. McGregor. All mem
bers are requested to be present as
the State Convention is at hand
and all dues and assessments must,
jbe paid at this meeting in order
; that the Chapter be allowed repre
! sentation.
Harry Grimes has gone to
Blackshear, we understand to take
a position in an automobile gar
age. Harry is a pretty good work
man, and he would have done
well in Lyons but he got started
wrong. He was not strict enough
in the management ot his busi
ness and he was entirely too care
less. YVe hope he will change
these tactics and that he will do
well at his new place.
Hunter Pearce & Batfcey, the
substantial, reliable, and wide
awake Factors, of Savannah, offer
you the same excellent service
that has convinced many
of the benefits of marketing cot
ton through them. Until you
have tried them, perhaps you are
neglecting an opportunity to real
ize more for your cotton than
heretofore They respectfully j
solicit your consignments.
We see that the contract for
the erection of the bridge across
the Altamaha river has been let
and that a firm of bridge builders
from Ohio will do the work. This
bridge is going to be of great bene
fit to all of Toombs county and ;
our people must take more inter
est in it. A little of the stock is
yet unsold and it is necessary
that Toombs county people take
it. You public spirited citizens who
have not taken stock should see
either C. YV. Brazzell, S. B. Mead

To the Democratic Voters of Geot
gia:
In response to suggestions made
to me bv tnv friends throughout
tlie State I be? to announce mv
candidacy for the position of Com

our Sta f e id v-rnment was passed
!>v the legislature at recent session
and provided that the Commission
er shall be elected at the same
special election that is called to
fill the coming vacancy in the of
fice of Governor. If elected to
this office it shall be my earnest
aim and purpose to so organize
and manage this new department
as to make it of the greatest value
and benefit to the people of the
State, and to discharge its duties
impartially and fairly for all the
people alike.
I respectfully solicit and will
greatfully appreciate \ our support.

Savannah, Ga.. Sept 16, 1911.
YY’e suggest that Mayor Smith
instruct the Clieif of Police to pick
up and use on the streets all worth
less negroes und white men out of
, a job. They can offer no excuse as
there i» work fer every man, no
mart- r who he is, provided he
wains to work. In every city and
town m the state we can see where
such orders are issued and it is
having the effect that very few of
them will refuse work. These loaf
ing negroes wont be found on the
streets, but if a search is made
they will be found in numbers
hanging around the negro restau
rants, dance halls and small st res.
YY’e walked down the streets the
j other day and we saw us many as
i ten in one crowd. Let the cities
get busy and break up these loaf
ing places and the farmers wont
have so much trouble getting cot
ton picked. Now is the time to
break them up.
The Republican party of the
county of Ti-nmbs held a meeting
at the conn house in Lyons a few
days ago ui <1 they appointed dele
gates to gi, i>» Dublin on the 15th,
to perfee; the organization of the |
12th District committee The lead
ers say they nud a large crowd at
the meeting in Lyons and that E.
B. Cooper was elected county
chairman, and 8. C. Morph as the ,
1 secretary. The delegates to Dublin j
were E. B. Cooper, Rev. A. J.
Gould, with J. Hall and John
Singleton as alternates. E. B.
Cooper, the county chairman, is
asking that all the colored people
come up and pay taxes on time so
that they can register and vote as
all good citizens should.
The stockholders of the Altama
ha Bridge Company will meet in
Lyons to-day (Friday) and we
must give them a royal welcome.
The meeting was called by the
Baxley people and representatives
will be here from Atlanta, Savan
nah, YY’aycross and other cities.
Our Toombs county people are not
taking the interest in the bridge
proposition they should and we
hope they will rally and do some
thing at this meeting The bridge
is going to be built and there will
be no further delay.
The Savannah people are work
ing for another train on the Sea
i board and we would be glad to see
{them get it. YYTiat we people want
I is a train from Savannah through
to Macon or Atlanta, and if we
cant get this train we want better
connection with the Seaboard at
Vidalia. YY’e have fair service to
Savaun ill but we have no service
north at all.
Manager Adams, of the Vidalia
Ice & Coal Co., was in the city
Thursday and he is arranging to
see that his firm serves our people
both with ice and coal. He is
just back home from his honey
moon and his many friends are
extending him hearty congraula
tions.

The Union Supply Company is
continually growing in popularity
and Manager Meeks is putting in
goods that attract trade This bus
iness was established for the bene
fit of the farmers and they are
getting the benefit if they trade
there.
W. M. Moseley, the Oak Park

The two Lyons ginneries ginned
nearly a hundred bales of cotton
Wednesday, and Mr. Driggers gin
ned ten bales, yet several wagons
had to go back home. We have
two good ginneries and a third
that does good work for a small
one, but we need still another and
a move is already on foot to erect
one for next season.
The cotton market has dropped
almost to nothing and now is the
time for the Union to show its
hand Farmers, dont glut the
market. The staple is worth more
than you are now getting and vve
advise that you hold what you
have for awhile anyway. Any sen
sible merchant or buyer that has
your interest at heart will not
urge you to sell at such prices.
We stopped over at the home of
Virgil Morris a few days ago while
out driving and we found there as
neat a farm as w ill be found in the
county. Virgil has tended about
60 acres of new ground and he has
a fine crop considering the sea
son. When we were leaving he put
iu our buggy some fine water
melons and pome fine new pota
toes that we enjoyed very much.
It is a little sickening to hear
some of the moneyed men say why
they wont invest in houses to rent.
It is a pity but what these same
men would have to pay double
pric‘d of labor so their profits would
not be so great. Theyforget that
a man of moderate means, the
only kind that will work, can’t
come here because he can’t get a
place to live, yet these money
sharks stand aside and say they
can’t build houses and rent them
because it don’t pay more than
eight per cent clear. Well, what
do they want anyway? >
