Passing of the Big Trusts.
The Standard Oil and Tobacco
trusts having been declared illegal
and are dissolving. It is reported
that the steel and harvester trusts
.anticipating prosecution, have
mortified the Attorney General that
itJhcy wanted to reorganize. It
'looks, therefore, as if the great
trusts would soon cease to have an
existence, at least their form.
They have pluyed a great part
in the country’s foreign and do
miestic trade. Will it be possible
under a new kind of organization
for them to hold the trade, at
liome and aboard, they' have? This
is a question to which no answer
is forthcoming at this time. How
ever, it is confidently believed
that the men who put them to
gether and made them the tre
mendous concerns they are have
the abilty to take them apart, re
-constrnct them so that they will
within the law and still hold
.-the business they now have, and
even increase it.
The task, particularly iu the
case of the steel trust is a hercu
lean oue. It will be difficult, if
not impossible, to identify some
of the merged properties, but re
organization wouldn’t be under
taken unless it were thought it
could be successfully accomplish
ed.
S many big things have been
accomplished in recent years in
connection with business that
business men do not hesitate to
attack any problem of a business
nature. Therefore, we may con
fidently except that the great
trusts will be so reorganize that
their restraint of trade will not be
unreasonable and there will be no
diminution in the volumn of their
business.—Ex.

Why He Was Wondering.
* Way down iu Virginia, once
upon a time, a man started a
store to purchase hides, says the
Frederick. Md., News. There being
no sign pa'nter handy, he devised
a nc vel method of advertising his
calling. He bored a hole in the
door of his storeroom and cutting
the tail from a fresh calf skin, he
stuck the butt end of it in the
hole. Next day he saw a f armer
silently chewing a straw and gaz
ing in deep contemplation upon
the calf tail. The dealer approach
ed him in the hope of making a
trade, but the farmer disdained
any such intention.
‘Well, what do you want, and
what are ye?’ asked the tanner.
‘I recon I’m what ye call one o’
these heah scientists,’returned the
farmer, whose eye bad never left
the calf tail.
“I’m tryin’ to figure out how' in
tarnation that ahr calf ever got
through that ahr augur hole I”
