H. M. STANLEY, of Laurens County.
Timely Suggestion.
Remove the liquor question
from the politics of Georgia.
This is the 6ound and timely
suggestion made by former Gover
nor Joseph M. Browu in an ad
dress to the people of Georgia
which appeared in the Enquirer
Sun.
Governor Brown suggests that
the State Executive Committee
provide for the submission of the
question to the white voters of
the state in the pending primary
for Governor, permitting them to
vote on the alternatives of prohi
bition or local option. And his
suggestion seems to be a sensible
one.
Mr. Brown very forcibly argues
that the ‘‘experience of other
States has show that agitation
over the suppression of the sale
of intoxicating liquors will con
tinue wi r-curring intensity un
til the p- p e have expressed their
will on tins subject at the ballot
box directly and w ithout confus
ion of other issues that personal
candidates.” In view cf this in
disputable fact, he suggests to the
State Executive Committee of the
Democratic party that it permit
voters of the state to express
themselves upon the alternatives
of ‘‘prohibition or local option”
in the coming primary, which will
settle the matter directly.
Until this question is settled,
and in a decisive manner, it will
continue to be a disturbing ele
ment in the politics of the State.
For several years past the question
of prohibition and anti-prohibi
tion has been the bone of conten
tion in Georgia. Neither side ap

pears to be satisfied with present
conditions, and it seems that the
time has come when it should be
disposed of in a definite, final
manner—when a decision should
be reached from which there can
be no appeal, except to the same
1 authority which rendered it.
Governor Brown’s request to
the Statf* Executive Committee
offers a solution of this problem
which has beer, disturbing and
distracting the people of the state
for so long a time, and it seems
that, if the people of Georgia want
to dispose of it and bring about
! the matter shon'.d be sub
mitted in the coming primary .
It is true that an election of
this kind would precipitate one of
i hottest political campaigi s the
State ha 9 experienced in many
years; this would be a most natu
ral consequence; it has been so
whenever such an election has
been ordered. But the result
would settle it, and that is a con
summation greatly to be desired
by every one who wants peace in
the political affairs of the State.
Os course those politicians who
aro making it a hobby upon which
to ride into office would naturally
oppose the suggestion, because a
settlement of the question would
deprive them cf their main polit

the wishes of a few office-seeking
politicians to the people of the
great State of Georgia—Colum
