Pure Religion
Kind Editor: —Pleas* allow me
space for a few words that I have
to say to the unconverted and the
backslider through the paper.
Well, James says iu the first chap
ter and 27th verse: “Pure religion
and undifiled before God and the
Father is this, to visit the father
less and widows in their afflictions,
and to keep himself unspotted
from the world.” Now, dear read
er friends, how many of us are
living spotless lives before tne
world. We, who are professed fol
lowers of Christ, are we living
pure and spotless? Is our record
clear today, or is it stained with
sin, such as social drinks, de
frauding our neighbors, telling
falsehoods, holding hatred and
malice against other professions,
and even smoking cigarettes. God
has an angel for His Secretary.
He has the record of your life
written down in plain words and
at the last day this record will be
read. Some reader may say, ‘‘oh,
its no harm to take a social drink
with a friend, or to smoke cigar
etts either.” Well you will see
when you come before a just God
if yon practise either habit. It is
charged against you . I dont see
but little difference in drinking
and smoking cigaretts. Os cours*
cigarette will not intoxicate a man
as whiskey will, but they are more
injurious to the health. The pois
onous nicotine will soon get in the
system and cause a man to be so
nervous until he cant hold his
hands still eiiough to roll a cigar
ette, and after awhile he will look
like a cake of tallow. They are al
so injurious to the luugs. Many a
man has died with consumption
brought on by cigarette smoking,
and friends, you bad just as well
take a revolver and blow your
brainß out so far as the sin is con
cerned as to kill yourself by de
grees. There is no difference in
the crime. Whiskey is just a slow
death. It will kill the body and
damn the soul just as cigaretts
will do. Now I say this with chris
ian love to all, but young and old
listen; if you are guilty of either
of these habits you can’t have any
influence in your community, and
as sure as you are living, will find
it charged against you on that
great roll book up yonder, if you
dont quit and repent of same.
I know some men who have
grown sons that drink before
them and they may give it to
them from all that I know, and
yet the\ <» long to the church and
claim to be Christians. Now don’t
you know the world in looking at
you and saving ‘‘that man has no
religion.” Such men are a pull
back to their family, a curse to
theirchurch and an abomination
in the sight of God. Pure religion
and undifi'ed before God the Fath
er is this-to visit the fatherless
and widows in their afflictions and
to keep himself unspotted from
the world. Oh, who are living
I
Perhaps you have never given much con=
sideration to their purchase, but think for a minute of the long days
~tkft little ones must spend in using them, and how muh pleasure and
satisfaction it means if everything is just like they want it.
Something that does not suit is a keen dis
oppointment, and now is the time that your children are forming
habits and ideas that will have a great influence on their futures.
Failure to equip them with the proper supplies is an actual
handicap.
We have taken all of these features into consideration in buying
our school supplies, and the children will receive the same prices, if
they come alone, as you do.

and to ministers who are spread-!
ing the gospel of Jesus Christ, yon ;
will fare better in this world and
reap a great reward in the world
to come. I have no patience with
this half hearted Christianity. God
has giveu us all a talent and that
talent we must improve or we will
bury it, aud if He comes and finds
we have buried it oh, what an aw
ful senteuce He will pass. But if
He finds we have improved our tal
ent he will give us still more, and
a happy reward will be ours. Read
er friends, it takes pure religion
and undefiled before God to do
His service and to please Him,
then if we do not please Him we
are not His followers. So dear
readers, lets start a new clear rec
ord today and not be a half hand
’ ed, half ‘hearted Christian any
longer. Once 1 read the life of a
1 minister who testified on his death
bed that he had not preached the
true go9pel. He said he had been
preaching to please the people, and
that did not please God, bo he
said he was going to hell for
preaching to please the people.
Now if this preacher’s experience
isn’t a lesson for us all, what will
it take to teach us a lesson? Thank
God we have a few ministers who
will stand firm and declare the
gospel truth in its purity, no mat
ter who it hits, and then the peo
ple will eay “I would like that
preacher, but he preaches most too
plain.” I’ll tell you now friends,
there has already been too much
of soft good-for-nothing preaching
and that is one reason why we
have so many church members
to-day who profess to be servants
of God, when they are Berva.its of
the devil.
Are you living spotless lives,
have you that pure religion and
undefiled before God? Then if you
have this pure religion you are
true servants of God, you love
your friends and neighbors, you
are ready to lift up the fallen, at
tend church, pay your preacher,
visit the sick, and when you speak
of a friend or neighbor it will be
words of kindness. Then let us bo
true to God, be true to our church
and God will help us to live this
spotless life before the world. Now
dear reader friends, I hope that
no one will get offended at what I
have said, as 1 have given you the
sentiment ol mv heart as a warn
ing to you, and trusting it will
find its way into the heart of
some eering one and cause them
to clear up their record,
I am yours in Christ,
Leona Womble.
