When Patches Were Popular.
In the eighteenth century the tint
ing of a beauty’s face and the nice
adjustment of the patch was one of
the serious businesses of the day, and
occasionally If my lady or her tiring
woman could not agree on such a
momentous question then were my
lady’s gallants called In to decide
whether these important patchee
should be so placed as to draw at
tention to the mischievous eyes, to
the fleeting dimple, or to the ex
quisite turn of snowy throat.
Special Cotton Seed.
I have on hand a few hundred
bushel of special, selected and
hand ginned cotton seed, taken
from a field on which the yield is
from five to eight hundred pounds

reasonable price. I guarantee seed
to be pure and those who use them
will be satisfied. Write me for
particulars and price.

The primary nse of powders was
for the adornment of the hair, dyes,
and powders of blue, red and green
being affected by the Saxons in place
of the gold dust with which Jews and
Romans were wont to sprinkle their
locks Later wheaten Hour and rice
powder were adopted, both for hair
and face, and these were not intro
duced into England until later Plan
togenet days, when a very decided
change in dress made itself apparent
