Vol 20. No 49 Editor C. T. Darley Claimed By Death Thursday At lO o’clock C. T. DARLEY, EDITOR OF THE LYONS PROGRESS, STRICKEN WITH APOPLEXY WEDNESDAY NIGHT—AGED ABOUT 46. (From Vidalia Advance) News was received in Vidaiai at 11 o’clock Thursday morning that Editor C. T. Darley of the Lyons Pro gress had just died, after suffering a stroke of apoplexy Wednesday night about nine o’clock. We have been unable ,to get the details, but it seems that Mr. Darley was stricken without warning and tho everything possible was done for his relief, he died without having re gained Consciousness. Mr. Darley was rearedj in Mont gomery county, but removed to Doug las several years ago, residing there until a few months ago, when he as sumed charge of the Lyons Progress and located in that city. Mr. Darley was a pleasant, affable ■ gentleman and his death will cause profound sorrow throughout this en ' tire section. He was about forty-six years of age. The deceased is survived by his' wife, two sons, Claude Darley of Douglas, and Fleetus Dapley of Ly ons, two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Thomad Os Allendale, S. C., and Miss Mary Darley of Lyons. The funeral will take place at Ly ons Friday afternoon from the Bap tist church, being in charge of the Masonic order, of which the deceas ed was a member. W. S HARDEN SR. Harden, Sr. announces this week his candidacy for Tax Col lector for Toombs County, subject tothe coming primary. He is an old native of this county, being born and raised in Toombs. He has de voted most al his life to farming, and is at present one of the most prom inent farmers of Toombs county. Mr. Harden has served two years as Tax Collector for this county, and while in office he served the people as an excellent Collector. Mr. Har den is capable of holding this office, and if elected no doubt he will fill the office to the best of his ability. SCARBORO, EX-SHERIFF TO RUN AGAIN FOR SHERIFF Mr. R. F. Scarboro, ex-sheriff of Toombs County wishes to state to his many friends that he will be in the race again for the office of Sheriff. He expects to carry his announcement in the next issue of The Progress. Mr. Scarboro has many friends in this county who will be glad to see him in the race for Sheriff, as ha made a splendid record when he was Sheriff before, and no doubt he will, if elected, serve the people of thia county as a good sheriff. The readers of The Progress will see in this issue 98 part of the last work done by Mr. Darley before he died. "ii? RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS WED NESDAY NIGHT ABOUT 12 O’CLOCK BY STROKE OF APPO LEXY. DEATH CAME SUD DENLY. (By H. R. Yandle) Mr. C. T. Darley, editor of The Lyons Progress for the past year died this morning about ten o’clock after suffering a short" time from a stroke of appoplexy. He was taken suddenly last night about twelve o’clock and never regained conscious ness. Mr. Darley was reared in Mont gomery county, but removed to Douglas several years ago, residing there until a few months ago, when he assumed charge of the Progress, moving his family here about a week ago. Since coming to Lyons Mr. Darley had many friends who will mourn his death. He was a very congenial gentlemen, always making friends and numbering them by his acquain tances. During his stay in our city Mr. Darley had made several improve ments on the paper and had several things in view for the upbuilding of the city, which he advocated through the colums of The Progress at all times. The deceased was a member of the First Baptist church in Douglas and had made his plans to unite with the local Baptist church on Sunday night, having his membership re- * moved from Douglas. Since becoming a citizen of Lyons Mr. Darley had taken an active part in church work and was considered one of the leading church workers ©f the city. The last money that the deceased spent was given to the church, he attending a Bazaar last night and after buying a sandwich he was handed some change and he immediately handed the change back stating that he desired to give that to the church. The deceased is survived by his wife, two sons, Claude Darley of Douglas, and Fleetus Darley of Lyons, two daughters, Mrs. Margar et Thomas, of Allendale, S. C., and Miss Mary Darley of Lyons. The funeral services were conduct ed at the local Baptist church, Fri day afternoon, Rev. Theo Pharr, pas tor of the Methodist church and Rev. A. D. Woodle, pastor of the Baptist church, having charge of the ser vices. Interment in Lyons cemetery MR. A. S. ODOM, OF LYONS, TO RUN FOR SHERIFF Mr. A. S. Odom, of this city, was in the Progress office Tuesday of this week, and states that he is being urged by his friends to make the Sheriff’s race for the coming term. He states also that his intentions are to run for sheriff, and that he hopes to be able carry his announcement in the next issue of the Progress. Mr. Odom, since being in this county has served a number of years as Deputy Sheriff, and is capable of ■ holding the office of sheriff. Mr. Odom, if he runs, and is elected will no doubt make the county a good sheriff, and fill the office to best of his ability. V NOTICE There will be a special teachers examination held in Toombs County, Decemjier the 15. The examination will open promptly at 10 o’clock at the court house.
