Acquired knowledge of generations
has -contributed to form the English
cottage type of house and this devel
opment of years finds its expression
in the beauty of the exteriors and In
the livable qualities of the interiors.
The home illustrated here presents*
a very pleasing picture with its com
bination of brick, stucco and timber.
The arched doorway of the vestibule,
with its contrasting keystone set li*
the arch of brick, helps to make a
pleasant panel of the vestibule with
its brick front and individual gable.
The terrace will prove to be, comfort
able and useful.
The arrangement of the seven major
rooms is such that they will render a
maximum amount of service without
demanding an extravagant amount of
housekeeping.
Choice of Plaster or
Stucco Base Important
To secure permanent results in plas
ter work, it is necessary to give great
er thought and consideration to the
base on which the plaster is applied.
The same consideration should be
given to the plaster base as one gives
to the foundation of the home. It
must he strong enough to permit the
use of plaster without permitting It to
strain, crack or eventually fall off.
The unsightly checking, cracking and
straining of piaster can be overcome
if a proper base is used. A reinforced
fabric plaster base has been found
ideal for this purpose, and ultimately
will save considerable money and In
convenience. The beam formation in
n plaster slab, that is backed by
a fire-resistive metal reinforced fabric,
adds great strength and rigidity to the
walls, and the reinforcement, being Im
bedded In the plaster, Is proof against
rust and corrosion.
For the stucco house, this type of
base has been used very successfully,
ils noncorrosive and rust-proof quail-

warfare to keep cloaks, wraps and
hats from being strewn about the
home. The living room, with the
cheerful fireplace at one end, Is ex
ceptionally well lighted, and opening
directly off this room Is the dining

doors from both the dining room and
the kitchen, will provide a setting for
many summer evening meals. The
kitchen Is well lighted and arranged.
The two bedrooms on the first floor,
with the accompanying bath, are
reached through a small hall off the
dining room. Both are of adequate
size and are well supplied with closets.
An extra closet In the hall provides a

ties lending strength to the stucco
and guaranteeing the permanence of
the material. No item in the construc
tion of a stucco house should be more
carefully considered than the base, If
one would guard against cracking,
checking and eventual loosening of
the material.
Make Rooms Attractive
by Picture Molding
The proportions of a room can be
made more attractive by the use of
picture molding. If the room Is high
and narrow, but long, the length can
apparently be reduced by having the
picture molding placed ul6ng the two
narrow walls. Molding used' only on
each end of the room will tend to draw
together these end walls.
Molding can be used to give a room
with low celling an effect of height
Have the molding placed at the top
of the wall, as If to join the side walls
to the celling.
Molding Is being used to form pan
els on walls. But the panel should not
be attempted In a small room.

An agricultural technologist of the

that a certain parasite, called “ruernii

GOOD BISCUITS "
Are Your Best Food
: SCIENTISTS tell us that wholesome properly
O raised biscuits contain more calories and more
j nourishment than any other bread. But every one
j knows that to be healthful and easily digested, bis
cuits must be carefully made and properly baked.
“Happily, my experience has shown that it is
almost impossible to make poor biscuits with
self-rising flour,” writes a housewife of Blythe
wood, S. C. “My biscuits in the North, made
’ with ordinary flour, were invariably a failure, but
I can truthfully say that when I use self-rising
flour the reverse is the case. . . . Through a
number of years’ experience I have found self
rising flour to be all ami more than its manufac
turers claim it to be, ... Its convenience and
economy in saving both time and labor can hardly
be over-estimated.”
Because it simplifies the work of baking and
practically eliminates failures, self-rising flour is
the most economical flour you can use. Aside
from this, dietitians and food experts commend
its healthful qualities. Next time you cook bis
cuits try self-rising flour. You’ll never regret it!
FOLLOW THESE FIVE RULES For Making Perfect Biscuits with
Self-Rising Flour. (1) Set that your oven is hot; (2) Always use sweet
milk or cold water ; (3) Sever add baking powder, soda or salt; (41
Use goad shortening — lard, vegetable fat or butter ; (5) Make sofl
dough-bake quickly. SOFT WHEAT MILLERS' ASS’N, Inc.
