AT WAR.
j •o-
War between the United States
and Spain is now going on. The
U. S. fleet left Key West last
night to blockade Havana.
News is flashed over the world
that Samson’s fleet encountered a
.Spanish fleet this (Friday) morn¬
ing about 9 o’clock somewhere
near Cuba. The first gun was
fired from the Nashville. Rumor
has has it that our New York sunk
the Spanish Alphonse with all of
her crew, supposed to 1 e about 500
Spansh soldiers. A Spanish sup.
ply ship was captured. The first
battle seems to be ours by large
odds.

ANOTHER FIRE.
The residence occupied by Mr.
W. Walker was destroyed by
lire Monday morning. A i«park
from the slab pit caught the shin¬
gles on the roof about 10 o’clock,
and had a good headway before
it was detected. All of th house-
house goads were saved, The
house belonged to Mr. Giles Fowl¬
er, of Newberry, Fla. The loss is
about $1,000. No one here knows
of any insurance on the house.
Mr. Walked moved his family
into the Ihully house vacated the
same day by Wm. Massey who
moved back to the country.
The telephone exchange build¬
ing scorched but was saved with
buckets.
Every house within ffiM) yards
of that slab pit ought to be cover¬

years, but long enough to livelier-

an impress upon the world that
will be lasting in its influence lor

A GEOWING EVIL-FiEJUBY,
Discussed by Col B, B. White.
Disregard for the sanctity and
obligation of oaths is fast becom¬
ing a common practice in oar
courts of justice, hardly a day
passes but what the active practi-
tioner of law notes instances
acts, that can be termed naught
but.perjtiry. The Bibles on the

by the lips of a multitude of per-
jurers during the session of a
I believe the evil is a grow-

indeed it is certain that for every
person convicted of perjury, which
is a cr ime. and which is suscepti-
i>le c f legal proof, there are htin-
dreds who escape because of the
trouble of proving t he yfl'ense to
the satisfaction of the law; an d
because of some whose express du-
ty to so prosecute, being negli-
g-ent. Thera are many persons,
t i00 ^ who swear falsely without in-
tending it,; inexactness of memo-
ry, confused and ignorant ideas
as to the meaning of words, or the
timidity into which the bullies

dieting testtimony when appar
ently perjury had entered some¬
where. When 1he Prince of Wales
was young and “perjured himself
like a gentleman” in the Mor-
daunt case, he gave no one species
of deliberate purjury something
of tne semblance of honor. It is
now, as it has long been, and 1 ap¬

American people in a court of

but none perhaps, was so serious
as the disregard of truth on the
part of persons, who it might have
been supposed could not bring ,
themselves to the act of perjury:
