improved under its present man-

It takes money and brains to
run a newspaper f-uccesfuliy, and

abundance of the latter, it, might

A Nkbra.ska editor recently
married, sagely remarks: Before
marriage woman is a charming
fancy, but after marriage she is a
solemn fact—and facts are stub¬
born things.
Editor Pi urn am f the Way-

couraging thing about the war in
tin- Phillippine is that the Amer¬

breastworks, outpost and towns
day after day.

marriage licenses must have at-

I don’t think God does either, for

them, and editor ain’t in the Bi¬

the missing links you hear about,

The reports that have been com¬
ing in from Manila during the
last few days tell of fiercer battles
and a greater list of
than have occurred at any D mo
since the commencement of hos¬
tilities between our troops ' and
the Fiiipinos. At lafit accounts,
the fighting was still in progress
Impelled by the same glorious and
invincible spirit that has ever an¬
imated the American soldier, our
troops have followed the Stars and
Stripes through swamps, rivers
and jungles, over hills and moun¬
tains, and hurled hack the stub¬
born Malay- time and again.
Many of their number have been
killed and wounded, but still they
are pressing forward, and the
world knows that nothing will
check them. And all for
Bike all good citizens of this
great republic of the new world,
we are proud of out country. Its
pa,-d; achievements and its present
greatness are excuse enough for
that. But there are some stains
on the pages of our past history
that are painful to the eyes of the
patriotic American citizen, and
to our mind the blackest of them
all is the wholesale slaughter of
the natives of the Philippine
Islands under the guise of “our
obligation to murder without
semblance of excuse, and we blush
that it is being perpetrated under
the Stars and Stripes.

Remove fte Cause.
The press may fairly thunder,
governors may offer rewards till
doomsday and law-abiding peo¬
ple in a - hold up their hands at
sir h outrages as the Palmetto
lynching, but the clfect will he
us a pebble thrown into a mighty
rushing river.
We denounce the perpetrators
of the Palmetto affair, but the
fate of the fiends is their just de¬
serfs, says the Macon county News.
The barbarous affair furnishes
another lesson to our law-makers.
Lynching is brutal, hut the
cause is worse. Remove the
cause, and then look to the effect.
Brutes will never cease to he
brutal until they are made to fear
as well as respect the law, and
this will be when our loose sys¬
tem of orjinua] laws is completely
overhauled.
Lop off (lie technicalities and
hair-splitting distictions in the
erimnal laws which furnish loop¬
hole.-; to the guilty, break some
links in the endless chain of the
average murder case—in other
words, let the people understand
that they will be dealt fairly by
and lynchings will, decrease and
end.
( t I have just recovered from the
second attact of la grippe this
year,” says Mr. Jas. A. Jones pub¬
lisher of the Leader, Mexia, Texas
“In the latter case I used Cham¬
berlain,s Cough Remedy, and I
think with considerable success,
oidy being in bed a little over
two days against ten days for the
former attact. The second attact
I am satisfied would have been
equally as bad as the first but for
the use of tliis remedy as I had to
go to bed in about six hours after
being ‘struck-’ with it, while in
the first case I was able to attend
to business about two days before
getting ‘down. >5 For sale by

No healthy person need f y
dangerous consequences from an
attact. of la grippe if properly
treated. It is much the same as a
severe cold and requires precisely
t ho same treatment. Remain
quietly at home and take Cham¬
berlain’s Cough Remedy as di¬
rected for a severe cold and a
prompt and complete recovery is
sure to follow. For sale by W. A.

HOW TO PREVENT PNEUMONIA.
You are perhaps aware that
pneumonia always results from a
cold or from an attact of la grippe.
During the epidemic of la grippe
a f ow years ago when so many
cases resulted in pneumonia, it
was observed that the attact was
never followed by that disease
when Chamberlain’s Cough Rem¬
edy was used. It counteracts any
tendency of a cold or la grippe to
