Public Roads.
The movement for better
lie roads should keep apace with
the efforts toward development in
other lines. II is not a matter of
how much good roads cost, hut
how much does it cost to be with¬
out them.--Fitzgerald
The Enterprise is
correct in gaying that “it is not a
matter of how much good roads
cost, but how much does it cost to
ho without them,” and no doubt
this was the idea that prevailed
in the minds of Worth’s recent
(fraud Jurors when they recom¬
mended that the county convicts
he worked on the public roads.
It is true that, it will take a
number of years of labor by the
convicts of the county and some
expense to accomplish the work,
hut if a start is never made good
roads will never he built, and the
people will have to continue
plodding along over the rouvli
roots and washouts of the high¬
ways of the county, to their dis¬
comfort and tlie rapid destruction
of vehicles and the wearing out
of many mules and horses.
Tile experience of the writer in
traveling over the county from
one aide to the other, during tlie
past two weeks, makes it plain to
his way of thinking, tiiat it is not
only discreditable to the county
that her roads are not any better,
but that the county is practicing
cruelty to animals in not provid¬
ing better highways upon which
they are to travel and draw heavy
burdens.
It would be money saved to
the people of the county to issue
bonds to help build good roads at
once than to let matters continue
as they are now.
The Local has always stood for
the host, highways obtainable and
plenty of them. Nothing devel¬
ops a country better and faster.—
Sylvester Local.
The above timely article is as
true as gospel, and Bro. Allen is
right in reminding Woith county-
citizens of the terrible condition
of our highways. And the late
Grand Jury is due a unanimous
vote of thanks for their wise rec-
omendation that the county con¬
victs bo worked on the public
roads. Good roads are essential
to the development of the county.
