L, A ODOMN,
| A SHREWD POLITICIAN.
| The President is showing nimself to be
| a pretty shrewd politician, not-withstand
:’ing the fact that hi is laughed at for his
: strenuosity and insisting that Mr. Cannon,
| the Speaker of the house, shall be the
i Republican nominee for Vice-President,
i and Mr. Root shall be the Republican
candidate for governor of New York
) And why does he insist upon Cannon
| and Root? Becouse there is some doubt
about his carrying Illinois and New York,
and De thinks they would assist him.
Mr. Cannonis very popular in Illinois.
‘ His name on the Presidential ticket would
be worth a good many thousand votes to
I it, and Mr. Root is popular in New York,
. It is probable that he eould come nearer
, carrying that state than ay other Repub
lican that could be named.
Mr. Cannon, however, doesn't want
the nominationu for Vice President and
isn't going to take it if he can avoid doing
so without making too many enemies in
his party, Ile prefers the place he has
~and would ratlier take the chance of being
re-elected to it than to he named for the
| second place on the presidential ticket.
L Mr Rootis even more emphatic in his
desire to keep out of Politics for the pre
sent. He resignet his placé in the cabi
net in order to get back to his law prac
tice. He wanted, he said, to provide a
competency for his family.
The I'resident, however, seems to think
his politicai fortunes are ot more conse
quence to his friends than their own can
possibly be to them and so, it is said, he
is insisting that Mr. Cannon and Mr.
Root shall abandon their plans and come
to his assistance —Savannah Morning
